CHAPTER 5: WHAT REALLY MATTERS

The house felt different after that.
Quieter.
Not empty—just… honest.
Weeks later, I canceled my next business trip.
Then the one after that.
Eventually, I stopped booking them altogether.
One afternoon, I sat at my desk when I noticed something slipped under the door.
A drawing.
A superhero.
Holding hands with a smaller hero.
I opened the door.
Leo stood there, smiling—really smiling—for the first time in months.
“Do you like it?” he asked.
I knelt down in front of him.
“I love it.”
He looked at me for a second, then said softly:
“Are you staying home now?”
I didn’t hesitate.
“Yeah, buddy. I’m staying.”
Because I finally understood something I should’ve known all along:
A house isn’t a fortress.
Money isn’t protection.
And success means nothing…
If the people you love aren’t safe inside it.
