Chapter 1

The next morning, I prepared Lily’s favorite breakfast: scrambled eggs, buttered toast, and strawberries sliced into tiny hearts. Usually, she would laugh and immediately steal the largest strawberry.

That morning, she only stared at the food.

“Why aren’t you eating?” I asked gently.

Her little fingers gripped the edge of the table. Her bottom lip began to shake.

“Am I in trouble?” she whispered.

The question struck me so hard I nearly dropped my coffee.

“In trouble? Honey, no. Why would you be in trouble?”

She suddenly broke down.

It wasn’t a dramatic child’s cry or ordinary whining. It was pure panic spilling out. She shoved the plate away and covered her face as though she expected me to shout.

“I didn’t mean to tell,” she sobbed. “Grandma said if I told you, you’d be so mad at me. Grandpa said families keep quiet.”

My stomach turned to ice.

I knelt beside her chair. “Tell me what happened.”

She shook her head violently. “You’ll hate me.”

“I could never hate you.”

Lily lifted red, terrified eyes toward me. “Grandma took me to a house. A lady was there. She said she was a lawyer. Grandma told me to say I wanted to live with them because you travel too much and don’t love me enough.”

For a moment, the kitchen seemed to shift beneath me.

“What?”

“She made me practice,” Lily continued, her voice cracking. “She said if I said it right, a judge would let me stay with them forever. She said you were selfish and maybe you’d send me away someday.”

I slowly stood.

My parents had not simply been caring for my daughter.

They had been preparing to take her away from me.

Then Lily whispered something that made my blood run even colder.

“Grandpa recorded me crying and told me to say you leave me alone at night. But that’s not true, Mommy. I lied because they scared me.”
