Chapter 6

Three weeks later, Bellmont House reopened after a complete management review.
Employees received back pay for improperly altered bonuses. A confidential reporting system was introduced. Customer-treatment policies were rewritten. Promotions now required anonymous staff feedback.
Maria became assistant manager.
Paul recommended hiring an outside executive as general manager.
Daniel refused.
“Give Maria six months.”
She earned the position in four.
As for Vanessa, the investigation uncovered enough falsified reimbursements for Bellmont Hospitality to pursue repayment. Other restaurants requesting references received only verified employment information and the documented reason for her termination.
Six months later, Daniel and Sophie returned to booth seventeen.
The restaurant was full.
A family in paint-stained work clothes entered nervously.
The host smiled.
“Welcome to Bellmont House.”
No judgment.
No hesitation.
Just welcome.
Sophie watched them take their seats.
“Better now?”
Daniel looked around at laughing servers, families enjoying dinner, and Maria confidently directing the evening rush.
At last, he felt his anger fade.
“Much better.”
Sophie raised her lemonade.
“To booth seventeen.”
Daniel tapped his glass against hers.
“To treating people right.”

Outside, rain shimmered across the city lights.
Inside, nobody needed expensive clothes to deserve a seat.
