Chapter 4

We did not interrogate her about her reaction. Brandon quietly put the black bag back into the cabinet, and from that day forward, he bought plain white trash bags for the house. He also stopped wearing leather belts entirely when he was at home. He never made a grand announcement about these adjustments; he simply paid close attention to the triggers that frightened his daughter and changed his habits without hesitation.
Meanwhile, Gertrude repeatedly altered her legal defense story. At first, she told investigators that the plastic bag was merely part of an innocent, fun fitness routine. Later, she claimed that Penelope had enthusiastically agreed to wear it. When our voice recording proved that Gertrude herself had characterized the act as a strict punishment, she insisted that she had only exaggerated her statements because I had provoked her at the front door. When the official medical report documented clear physical injuries, Gertrude claimed that her belt had only grazed Penelope once by total accident.
Then came the formal statements from Brandon and Brenda. In response, Gertrude publicly declared that her two adult children were deeply resentful liars and that I had somehow implanted false childhood memories into their heads.

However, there was one major flaw in her legal strategy that her lawyers could not erase. Her original, unvarnished explanation had been recorded on tape at her own front door before she knew she was being investigated. She had not given those statements to police officers or lawyers; she had offered them freely, believing she still held complete control over the family narrative. She had clearly stated that Penelope needed to burn off her cookies, she had admitted to the forced physical exercises, she had acknowledged using the belt, and she had openly bragged about raising her own children using those exact same methods.
The legal authorities promptly issued a formal protection order against Gertrude. She was strictly prohibited from approaching Penelope, attempting to visit her at school, calling her, or reaching out through third parties. Gertrude responded to the legal mandate by telling distant relatives that I had effectively stolen her precious granddaughter away from her. A few loyal family members continued to support Gertrude, but many others began to ask uncomfortable questions about her past actions.
