Chapter 6 - The Truth Revealed

“I can’t live like this,” I stated firmly, and for a moment, it felt like the world shifted around me, the clarity settling in place. “There’s something you need to tell me. Something about the money Sophie mentioned.”

Evan opened his mouth, hesitating, and for an instant, I saw genuine fear flash across his features. “You don’t know what you’re asking for.”

“But I’m asking for something real, Evan! Something grounded in truth—not these half-baked answers!” The tension in the room flared, and I could feel the heat rising from every corner, eyes piercing through me with every word. “What have you done?”

The silence persisted, clung thickly in the air like a fog refusing to lift. I stood there, alone on the stage, facing down the two men who represented both my past and my future. Once upon a time, they had been my anchors, and now, their faces reflected uncertainty more than trust. I took a breath, willing myself to hold steady.

“Peter, you need to tell her,” Evan finally uttered, the urgency lacing his words sharper than before.

For a moment, I could almost see the struggle waging within Peter, his face contorting with conflicting emotions. “You don’t understand what you’re inviting in,” he warned, stepping closer, his voice low. “It’s not just money; it’s…”

“What? What is it?” I pressed, desperate for clarity.

“It’s about the inheritance,” he said, his words slicing through the tension like a blade. “The money we thought was gone… it’s tied to something we can’t explain right now.” His voice faltered, and I could see panic etched into Evan’s face as well.

“What do you mean?” I was bewildered, struggling to make sense of the puzzle pieces they were throwing at me. “Who’s inheritance?”

“It’s Jonathan’s,” Peter spat, his tone sharp, laced with desperation. “There are things about his past that you don’t know, Lila.”

My mind reeled. “What do you mean? What about his past?”

“There are people who don’t want you to find out,” Evan interjected, his voice rising with urgency. “It’s dangerous to dig too deep; trust me.”

The reality crashed over me, the realization that there were layers of deception I had not even begun to comprehend. “You’re saying this is about Jonathan’s family? His money?”

“Yes,” Peter said, grim, his gaze flickering towards the guests who were now leaning into the drama, hungry for more. “And if you push this, the consequences will follow. You might not be ready for what’s coming.”

My heart raced, and time slowed as I processed the enormity of what I had uncovered. I was standing at the precipice of something immense, and the impact of it all threatened to knock me off my feet.

Panic surged in my chest. “What do you mean by consequences?”

“There are people who want that money back, and they will stop at nothing to get it,” Peter warned, his tone grave. “You have a daughter to protect.”

It was a plea, but the truth behind it felt laced with a deeper fear. “Are you saying Evan’s in danger?” I turned, facing Evan who stood grim, watching me with a resigned look. “Is that why you’re being evasive?”

“No, it’s why you need to step back from all this,” Evan replied, his voice tugging at my resolve. “We can figure this out together, but not here, not now.”

But it felt like something vital was at stake. It felt like a storm gathering momentum, and every moment wasted pushed us further towards the eye of it. I turned back to Sophie, who watched with wide eyes, clearly still unaware of the gravity of the situation surrounding her. “It’s okay, honey,” I said, forcing a calmness I didn’t possess.

But what Peter had revealed lingered, a shadow hovering over the celebration. “You’re hiding something important from me,” I said, my voice steady but full of resolve. “And that’s not okay.”
