Chapter 2 - The Rewind

The security manager swallowed hard, tapping nervously against the screen of the tablet. The device hummed quietly in the heavy silence of the ballroom as the video file loaded. Dozens of wedding guests—attracted by the drama—had formed a wide circle around us, whispering among themselves.
Chloe Vance pushed through the crowd, her veil trailing behind her like a white ghost. “What is going on? Why is everyone staring at the floor? Preston, what did she do?”
“Nothing, Chloe, it’s just a misunderstanding—batteries in the camera are probably glitching anyway, let’s just call off the—,” Preston stammered, his hand darting out to snatch the tablet from the security manager’s grip.
Before his fingers could even brush the glass, my hand shot out and clamped around his wrist with a grip that made him yelp.
“Touch that tablet, Preston, and I’ll break every bone in your hand before the cops even pull into the parking lot,” I whispered, my voice low and venomous.
He stared at me, truly seeing me for the first time—not as an invisible, overworked event coordinator, but as a mother whose child had just been assaulted and humiliated. He swallowed hard and pulled his hand back.
“Play it,” I told the security manager.
The manager pressed play.
The high-definition, wide-angle footage materialized on the screen. The timestamp displayed 3:42 p.m.—fifteen minutes prior.
The camera angle was perfect. It showed the gift table draped in white lace, the glittering crystal favors arranged neatly in silver bowls, and the empty aisle where Sophie had been sitting quietly with a coloring book and a box of crayons.
For the first minute, nothing happened. Sophie was visible in the corner, coloring diligently, entirely absorbed in her own world.
Then, the frame shifted.
Preston Vance walked into view from the side corridor. He wasn't holding a drink, but his gait was unsteady, and his face was flushed. He looked around the empty room, his eyes scanning the gift table.
On the video, Preston approached the table, picked up one of the heavy crystal favors, and looked around furtively to see if anyone was watching. When he noticed Sophie looking up from her coloring book, a dark, calculating expression crossed his face.
Gasps rippled through the gathered crowd in the ballroom.
Preston lunged forward on the screen, grabbing Sophie by the arm with unnecessary roughness, marching her toward the center aisle, and forcefully shoving the crystal object into the pocket of her oversized denim jacket before throwing her violently to the floor.
The video played out the exact moment of the loud crash—the moment Preston pointed down at her and screamed that she was a thief.
The tablet screen went black as the manager paused the playback.

Nobody breathed.
The silence in the grand ballroom was so profound you could hear the distant hum of the air conditioning vents. Every eye in the room slowly turned away from the screen and locked onto Preston Vance.
