The Mercer Foundation’s independent investigation reconstructed the correspondence channel.
It found two parallel histories.
The history Lorenzo received:
Maeve wanted distance.
She had reaffirmed no contact.
She did not want Birdie confused.
The history Maeve received:
Lorenzo rejected contact.
He considered letters disruptive.
He did not want Birdie reminded of her biological mother.
Neither history was real.
The language came from Isolde.
Investigators found draft responses on an archived foundation laptop.
Some were never sent.
Others matched messages Maeve had received almost word for word.
Then came an unexpected document.
A personal note Isolde wrote before her first private dinner with Lorenzo.
L.V. — Elena still central. B. origin file complicated. Do not raise Maeve immediately. Become useful first.
Grace read it silently.
Next line:
Offer archive help after trust established.
Another:
He hates disorder more than bad news. Give him conclusions, not process.
Lorenzo looked away.
That sentence knew him too well.
Then investigators found Isolde’s calendar from the same period.
June 3:
Birdie file accessed.
June 5:
Lorenzo private contact information located.
June 18:
Isolde attends Vescari Foundation gala.
July 17:
Dinner with Lorenzo.
September:
First archived message telling Maeve Lorenzo declined contact.
October:
Isolde tells Lorenzo she has “checked the old files” and found nothing new.
The sequence was ugly.
Then the friend whose messages investigators had already reviewed turned over another conversation.
Friend:
Did you meet him because of that adoption file?
Isolde:
I already knew him.
Friend:
Not what I asked.
Isolde:
The file told me where the fracture was.
Friend:
That sounds insane.
Isolde:
It told me what the family needed.
The fracture.
Birdie’s origins.
Elena’s death.
Lorenzo’s guilt.
A missing woman who might someday reappear.
Isolde had seen a confidential file and treated it like a map.
Still, investigators wanted one more thing before calling it the full explanation.
Why had she kept Maeve and Lorenzo separated after becoming engaged?
If her goal was only to get close to Lorenzo, she had already succeeded.
Why continue?
The answer appeared in a draft wedding-planning memo.
Not about flowers.
About family positioning.
