Chapter 3

“Move as far from the mechanical structure as possible,” the dispatcher said. “Stay low. Help is coming.”

At 4:26, the first engine arrived.

At 4:28, Daniel arrived as incident commander.

I never expected my husband to abandon his position and run into the building for us.

Fire scenes don’t work like movies.

An incident commander manages resources, tracks crews and makes decisions affecting dozens of people.

What I expected Daniel to do was his job.

Because his wife and child were trapped, he also should have transferred decisions directly affecting us to another chief when one became available.

He didn’t.

A firefighter established a radio patch with Miguel’s handheld unit.

Then I heard my husband’s voice.

“Rachel, report conditions.”

I closed my eyes for one second.

Hearing him made me feel safe.

“Smoke pushing through the west ventilation housing. No visible flame on roof. Seven people total. Lily is coughing, but everybody is conscious.”

“Can everyone walk?”

“Yes.”

“Stay north. Ladder Seven is coming.”

“Daniel?”

“I hear you.”

“Please hurry.”

“We’re coming.”

His voice was steady enough that I believed him.

Then Olivia appeared on the third-floor balcony.

She rented a photography studio in the building. I had known that.

I hadn’t known she was working there that afternoon.

She had apparently stayed behind trying to save several pieces of camera equipment before smoke cut off the corridor.

From the roof, I couldn’t see her.

But I could hear her.

“Daniel!”

The radio channel filled with overlapping voices.

An interior captain reported, “Team Three approaching south-side studio. Approximately two minutes to civilian location.”

A street medic added, “Visual on balcony occupant. Female upright, responsive, speaking full sentences.”

Then Olivia screamed again.

“Daniel, please! I can’t breathe!”

Daniel answered her through a loudspeaker from the street.

“Olivia, stay on the balcony. Firefighters are coming from inside.”

“No! No, I can’t! Daniel!”

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“You promised Nolan!”

I knew exactly what those words meant.

So did Daniel.

The dispatcher came over the radio.

“Ladder Seven approaching north side for roof operation.”

Daniel’s voice followed.

“Redirect Ladder Seven south.”

Deputy Chief Harris intervened.

“Daniel, hold. North roof currently has seven trapped with no interior access, including two children. South civilian is ambulatory and has interior rescue approaching.”

“Olivia has severe smoke exposure and trauma history.”

“Do you have updated medical information?”

A pause.

Daniel said, “I can see her condition.”

“Command, recommend maintaining north-roof aerial priority.”

Daniel answered, “Get Olivia off that balcony first.”

“Confirm reassignment.”

“Confirmed.”

Far below, Ladder Seven turned.

Lily watched it.

She didn’t understand incident command.

She didn’t know who Nolan was.

She only understood that her father had told us help was coming and then sent it somewhere else.
