Chapter 8 - Legal Battles and Uncovering Forgery

Under intense pressure from everyone in the room, he finally surrendered the truth. Months before meeting Jocelyn, he had accumulated massive debts from illegal gambling and failed investments that he hid from everyone. When the creditors began demanding payment, he started constructing elaborate lies.

He lied to Nora first, then to Miriam, and eventually to Jocelyn’s wealthy family.

He had met Jocelyn through a corporate software project for her family’s firm, learning that she suffered from a chronic health condition and worked primarily from home. Brandon presented himself as a single, financially stable bachelor who had no surviving family ties.

“Did you ever actually love my daughter?” Jocelyn’s mother asked through heavy tears.

Brandon hesitated for far too long before answering. “In the beginning, I thought I could use her money to solve my debts, but eventually, I did develop feelings for her.”

Nora closed her eyes, disgusted by his words.

Miriam still needed one final answer. “And what about my fake illness?”

“It was just an excuse to stay away,” Brandon mumbled.

“And what about the expensive medical treatments I paid for with my savings?” Miriam pressed on.

“I used all that money to pay off my gambling debts,” Brandon confessed.

Nora remembered all the exhausting Sundays she spent working extra hours, her own mother transferring cash to help pay rent, and the deep guilt she carried believing she was failing an ill mother-in-law.

“You had the nerve to demand that I sell my beauty studio,” Nora said coldly.

Brandon stared down at the polished floor. “I desperately needed liquid cash.”

“No, you simply wanted to drain every resource I possessed,” Nora corrected him sharply.

Jocelyn’s father walked over to the front entrance and threw the door wide open. “Get out of my house immediately.”

“Sir, please do not do this to me,” Brandon begged desperately.

“My daughter passed away believing that you were an honorable, free man who cared for her out of pure love, but you deceived her every single day,” the father spat back in anger.

Brandon fell to his knees on the rug, sobbing pathetically. “Mother, please do not abandon me here because there are dangerous collectors looking for me, and if I do not pay them, I do not know what they will do to me.”

Miriam stepped back from him with disgust. “Do not ever call me your mother again just to beg for money.”

Nora calmly unclasped her wedding ring, set it down on a side table beside a vase of white lilies, and walked out the front door without looking back.

The very next morning, Nora sought out a top family law attorney named Laura Cárdenas. She brought along bank statements, fraudulent wire transfers, text messages, and her valid marriage certificate. Miriam provided her own personal deposit receipts, while Jocelyn’s family hired a prominent legal team to protect their estate.

Over the following weeks, the missing piece of the puzzle was brought to light when investigators discovered Brandon had submitted forged records to feign a legal separation, including a forged signature attributed to Nora on a document she had never seen in her life.

“That signature is a complete forgery,” Nora stated to her legal team.

Laura looked at her client with grave seriousness. “Then this case goes far beyond marital infidelity and enters major felony fraud.”
