Chapter 2 - MY HUSBAND ACCUSED ME OF CHEATING… THEN THE DOCTOR REVEALED THE SECRET HE NEVER EXPECTED

Derek stopped walking.
Literally stopped.
For a few seconds, nobody in that ultrasound room moved.
The machine continued making that soft electronic humming sound.
The baby’s heartbeat continued echoing through the speakers.
Fast.
Steady.
Alive.
But the look on Dr. Evans’ face had changed everything.
Because she wasn’t looking at me like a doctor looking at a confused patient.
She was looking at Derek like she had just discovered something he desperately didn’t want anyone to know.
“What exactly are you saying?” Derek asked.
His voice was different now.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Nervous.
Dr. Evans removed her gloves slowly.
“Mr. Mitchell, I need to ask you a few questions before I explain anything.”
He crossed his arms.
“I already told you. I had a vasectomy.”
“When?”
“Two months ago.”
“Where?”
He hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
The doctor noticed too.
“At which clinic?”
Derek looked away.
“Why does that matter?”
“Because,” Dr. Evans said calmly, “a vasectomy performed two months ago does not immediately guarantee sterility.”
“I know that.”
“Do you?”
The room went silent.
I looked at Derek.
For weeks, he had made me feel like a criminal.
Like I had destroyed our marriage.
Like I had betrayed him.
But now…
For the first time…
He looked uncomfortable.
Dr. Evans turned the monitor slightly.
“Sarah, I want you to understand something.”
She pointed toward the ultrasound image.
“The baby’s development matches your estimated pregnancy timeline.”
I swallowed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means this pregnancy began approximately twelve weeks ago.”
Derek immediately interrupted.
“That’s impossible.”
The doctor looked at him.
“No. It is not.”
My heart started pounding.
Twelve weeks.
I did the math.
I looked at Derek.
“You told me your procedure was eight weeks ago.”
He didn’t answer.
Because everyone in that room suddenly realized the same thing.
The timeline didn’t match.
Jessica stepped forward.
“Wait. Are you saying the vasectomy failed?”
Dr. Evans looked at her.
“I’m saying we need more information.”
Then she looked back at Derek.
“Did you complete your required follow-up sperm analysis?”
Silence.
A terrible silence.
I felt cold all over.
Because I already knew the answer.
Derek looked annoyed.
“I didn’t think it was necessary.”
The doctor blinked.
“You didn’t think it was necessary?”
“I was busy.”
“Mr. Mitchell, the entire purpose of the follow-up test is to confirm whether sperm are still present.”
He looked away.
“I trusted the procedure.”
Dr. Evans nodded slowly.
“And your wife trusted you.”
That sentence hit harder than anything else.
Jessica suddenly grabbed Derek’s arm.
“Derek…”
He pulled away.
“Not now.”
Not now.
Two words.
But they revealed more than he realized.
Because Jessica was no longer standing beside a confident man.
She was standing beside someone whose story was falling apart.
Dr. Evans continued.
“There is another concern.”
My chest tightened.
“What concern?”
She looked at me.
“During your initial bloodwork, there was something unusual.”
“What?”
She opened my chart.
“Your pregnancy hormones are consistent with a normal pregnancy.”
I nodded.
“So?”
“But there was also a notation from another physician.”
I frowned.
“What notation?”
Dr. Evans looked at Derek.
“Your husband requested access to your medical information two weeks ago.”
My mouth fell open.
“What?”
I turned toward him.
“You accessed my records?”
Derek’s face changed.
“I was your husband.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Jessica suddenly looked confused.
“Wait…”
She stared at Derek.
“You told me she was hiding something.”
My head snapped toward her.
“You told her what?”
Jessica froze.
Derek immediately stepped in.
“Jessica, stop.”
But it was too late.
The words were already out.
I slowly sat up on the exam table.
“You told Jessica I was lying?”
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
Dr. Evans looked between the three of us.
Then she said:
“Mrs. Mitchell, I think there are several things happening here that you were not informed about.”
My hands tightened around the sheet covering my legs.
“What things?”
She took a breath.
“First, your husband’s vasectomy records need to be verified.”
“Second, the timing of your pregnancy does not support his accusation.”
“And third…”
She paused.
“There is a possibility your husband knew the procedure had not been confirmed successful.”
The room spun.
“What?”
Derek immediately stepped forward.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Dr. Evans remained calm.
“Then you should have no problem providing the post-procedure test results.”
He said nothing.
And that silence…
That silence told me everything.
Two months earlier, Derek had told me the surgery was done.
He told me we were finally safe.
He told me we could stop worrying.
But he never told me about any follow-up appointment.
Never showed me paperwork.
Never mentioned results.
I trusted him.
Because he was my husband.
Then Jessica spoke.
Quietly.
Almost like she was talking to herself.
“Derek…”
He looked at her.
“You said you had proof.”
My stomach dropped.
“What proof?”
Jessica’s face turned pale.
She realized she had just exposed something.
Derek grabbed his jacket.
“We’re leaving.”
“No.”
Dr. Evans’ voice stopped him.
“You are not leaving until we finish discussing the medical records.”
He glared.
“You can’t force me to stay.”
“No.”
The doctor calmly replied.
“But your wife can request a copy of every document related to this procedure.”
I looked at Derek.
And for the first time since I saw those two pink lines…
I didn’t feel scared.
I felt angry.
That evening, after I returned home, I opened the folder Derek left behind.
The divorce papers.
The custody demands.
The accusations.
Everything he had prepared to destroy me.
But something was hidden underneath.
A small white envelope.
With his handwriting.
I almost threw it away.
Until I saw the words written on the front:
“DO NOT LET SARAH FIND OUT.”
My hands started shaking.
I opened it.
Inside was a medical document.
A surgical report.
And a laboratory result.
The date was from six weeks ago.
The day after his supposed vasectomy.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
And my entire body went numb.
Because the result said:
“Patient still has active sperm present. Follow-up procedure required.”
Derek knew.
He knew the vasectomy was not confirmed.
He knew pregnancy was still possible.
He knew the baby could be his.
But why?
Why would he accuse me?
Why would he destroy our marriage?
Why would he leave me for Jessica?
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Sarah?”
“Yes?”
“Please don’t hang up.”
“Who is this?”
A long pause.
Then she said:
“My name is Dr. Evans’ nurse.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why are you calling me?”
Her voice became softer.
“Because after you left today, we found something else in Derek’s medical file.”
“What?”
She took a shaky breath.
“Something that proves your husband wasn’t just hiding the failed vasectomy.”
“He was hiding the reason he needed one in the first place.”
I sat frozen.
“What are you talking about?”
The woman whispered:
“Sarah…”
“Your husband didn’t get that vasectomy because of you.”
“He got it because he was trying to hide another woman.”
May you like
And then she said the name that made my entire world collapse:
“Jessica.”
