Chapter 1 - The Tokyo Ambush

“Tokyo? Four years?”

The silver fork slipped from my fingers, striking the edge of the bone-china plate with a sharp, hollow clang that echoed through the dining room. The silence that followed was suffocating, thick with the scent of roasted rosemary and the sudden, sharp metallic taste of adrenaline in the back of my throat.

David reached across the mahogany table, his fingers wrapping around my trembling hand. He wore that same practiced, apologetic smile—the one that had successfully navigated us through a decade of minor disagreements and major life decisions. His thumb stroked my knuckles, a gesture meant to soothe, but which suddenly felt like a restraint.

“Four years will fly by, Eleanor,” he murmured, his voice a smooth, calming baritone. “I’m doing this for our future. The firm is expanding its Asian markets, and this promotion… it’s the summit. It’s everything we’ve worked for.”

Before the sheer logistical nightmare of a four-year separation could fully crystallize in my mind, a hand slammed down onto the table. The crystal wine glasses trembled.

“Oh, praise the Lord!”

It was my mother-in-law, Teresa. She sat rigidly in the high-backed chair opposite me, her neck draped in pearls I had bought her for her sixtieth birthday. She turned her haughty, calculating gaze toward me, her lips curling into a triumphant smile.

“Our son is finally getting the recognition he deserves,” she declared, her voice ringing with an authority she had never truly earned in my home. She leaned forward, her eyes glittering with a predatory light. “And while David is away securing his legacy, your father-in-law and I will move in here. You won’t be lonely, Eleanor. And frankly, it’s about time you had the chance to fulfill your responsibilities as a proper daughter-in-law. This house is too big for one woman to manage alone, especially one who… struggles to focus on family.”

The implication hung in the air, a venomous dart aimed directly at my barren womb. We had been trying for a baby for three years.

No one asked what I wanted. No one inquired if my career as a senior architectural consultant could withstand my husband disappearing across the globe, leaving me to play caretaker to two people who openly despised me. It wasn’t a request. It was a perfectly coordinated ambush. They had planned to trap me for 1,460 days inside my own home, a hostage to a woman who criticized my every breath.

I looked at David. He didn’t meet my eyes. He was busy cutting his steak.

A cold, dark realization began to pool in my stomach. Fine, I thought, lowering my eyes to my plate, the expensive cut of meat suddenly tasting like ash.

“Fine,” I whispered, forcing my voice to remain steady. “I accept.”
