Chapter 3 - The Breach And The Syndicate

Julian froze. He didn’t have time to process the command.

The heavy, solid oak front door didn’t just unlock; it exploded inward in a concussive shower of splinters, pulverized drywall, and blinding white tactical flashlights, plunging us straight into the apocalypse.

The breach was a masterpiece of orchestrated violence.

Dozens of operators clad in unmarked, pitch-black tactical gear poured through the shattered doorway like a flood of dark water. They moved with silent, synchronized, lethal precision. The glowing red laser sights of their suppressed rifles cut through the darkness, pinning Julian to the wall like a butterfly on a mounting board.

“GET ON THE GROUND! DO NOT MOVE!” the lead operator roared, a voice commanding unquestionable obedience.

Serena screamed, dropping to the floor and curling into a fetal position, sobbing hysterically. Julian, his arrogant bravado entirely evaporated, raised his trembling hands, his face a mask of absolute, paralyzing terror. He dropped to his knees amidst the splintered ruins of his own front door.

Then, the tactical operators parted, creating a path through the dust and debris.

The shadows of the night yielded, and my brothers walked into the ruined foyer. They didn’t walk like men; they moved with the terrifying, synchronized grace of apex predators.

Victor, the billionaire CEO of Vanguard Global Holdings, stepped in first, adjusting the cuffs of his flawless charcoal suit. Behind him came General Marcus, his chest heavy with medals, his eyes like frozen steel. And then came Dante.

Dante, the undisputed kingpin of the Chicago underworld, smelled faintly of expensive Cuban cigars and gunpowder. He crossed the room in three massive strides. He didn’t speak. He reached down, grabbed Julian by the throat of his bespoke shirt, and lifted him entirely off his feet, slamming him violently against the remaining drywall.

Julian choked, his feet kicking uselessly in the air, his eyes bulging as he clawed desperately at Dante’s unyielding forearm.

“You terrified my niece,” Dante whispered. It was a low, guttural rasp that carried far more homicidal promise than any shout.

“Who… who are you?!” Julian gasped, spit flying from his lips. “I’ll have you arrested! I know the Chief of Police! I play golf with him! He’ll put you all away!”

I walked slowly out of the shadows of the living room. I didn’t rush.

Julian twisted his neck painfully in Dante’s grip to look at me. “Evelyn! Tell them to stop! Call Chief Miller! Please!”

I stopped in the center of the foyer. “I told you I would handle the dress, Julian. Meet my family.”

Julian’s eyes widened to impossible proportions as the reality of his error crashed over him. He hadn’t married an orphan. He had married into a syndicate.

“As for your promotion,” Victor spoke up, his voice dripping with aristocratic disdain. “Vanguard Global acquired your firm exactly fourteen minutes ago. You aren’t just fired, Julian. My legal team has ensured you are personally liable for the millions in ‘missing’ funds my cyber division planted in your offshore accounts. You are a pauper.”

Julian sobbed, a pathetic, broken sound. But the narcissist in him refused to die completely. As Dante loosened his grip slightly, Julian’s hand darted into his pocket. He didn’t pull a weapon; he pulled his backup burner phone.

With frantic, trembling fingers, he hit speed dial and hit speakerphone.

“Chief Miller! Tom! It’s Julian! They’re in my house! Armed men! Help me!” he screamed into the device before Dante backhanded the phone across the room, shattering it against the wall.

A tense silence fell over the room. The tactical operators tightened their grips on their rifles.

“He called local law enforcement,” General Marcus noted calmly, checking his watch. “Response time in this affluent sector is under four minutes.”

“Let them come,” I said quietly.
