Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Walked Into Her Own Memorial

Grant began his speech at exactly eleven o’clock.

I watched from a room behind the chapel while Sheriff Shaw’s deputies secured the exits. Nathan stood beside my wheelchair, one hand resting on the handles.

Through the monitor, I saw coworkers, pilots, nurses, board members, and families whose children Northstar had transported during medical emergencies.

They had come to honor me.

Grant had come to inherit me.

He placed his hand on the empty casket.

“Lena believed Northstar was more than a company,” he said. “It was her mother’s legacy and our family’s future.”

His voice broke in exactly the right place.

Brooke stood near the first row wearing black. She looked ill, but Grant appeared too confident to notice.

“Although no one can replace my wife, I have asked the board to allow me to continue her work as acting chief executive.”

Several board members exchanged uneasy glances.

Grant continued.

“Brooke Ellis has agreed to serve beside me as chief operating officer. Together, we will protect everything Lena built.”

Sheriff Shaw looked at me.

“The warrant team is ready.”

I rose carefully from the wheelchair. Pain pulled across my abdomen, but I refused to enter my own memorial hidden beneath a blanket.

Nathan offered his arm.

The chapel doors opened.

At first, only the people in the back row noticed me. Their expressions changed from confusion to disbelief.

Then someone gasped.

Grant stopped speaking.

I walked slowly down the aisle with Nathan beside me and Sheriff Shaw several steps behind.

The entire chapel rose.

Grant gripped the podium.

“Lena?”

Brooke moved away from him.

I stopped beside the casket.

“You told everyone the fire took me.”

His face had turned gray.

“This isn’t possible.”

“You made the same mistake at Cedar Ridge. You decided what was possible without asking me.”

He looked toward the exits and noticed the deputies.

Then he changed tactics.

His expression softened.

“Lena, you’re confused. You’ve suffered terrible trauma. Whatever you think happened—”

I placed my phone on top of the casket and pressed play.

His recorded voice filled the chapel.

Once the memorial is over, people will stop searching. I take Northstar, we wait for the legal declaration, and then the policy pays.

Guests turned toward Grant.

He stared at Brooke.

“You recorded me?”

She said nothing.

Sheriff Shaw stepped forward.

“Grant Morgan, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy, aggravated arson, and insurance fraud.”

A deputy took his arm.

Grant pulled away.

“This is insane! Brooke planned the fire. Lena is unstable, and that man has been manipulating her.”

He pointed at Nathan.

“She doesn’t even know who he is.”

“I know he came when the alarm sounded,” I replied. “You drove away.”

Grant looked at me with the hatred he had hidden throughout our marriage.

“Ask him why Evelyn spent thirty-five years hiding you from him.”

The chapel fell silent again.

Nathan’s grip tightened on the back of my wheelchair.

Grant smiled as the deputies restrained him.

It was the first genuine smile I had seen from him that morning. Even while losing everything, he believed he had found one final secret capable of hurting me.

I turned toward Nathan.

His expression confirmed it.

May you like

My husband had lied about the fire, the insurance, Brooke, and my future.

But as Grant was led away from the empty casket, I realized Nathan had not told me the whole truth either.
