Chapter 2

The first deputy arrived about eleven minutes later.
Ryan opened the door holding champagne and wearing the confident smile he used whenever he thought he could talk his way out of trouble.
“My wife is emotional because I’m leaving her,” he said.
Deputy Elena Brooks looked at my arm.
“Did you cause those marks?”
Ryan shrugged. “I helped her outside.”
“He dragged me from the bedroom and pushed me out,” I said.
Vanessa appeared behind him wearing one of my sweaters.
“I didn’t see anything.”
“You were standing in the bedroom,” I replied.
While Deputy Brooks documented the incident, Ryan kept talking as though charm could turn everything into a marital disagreement.
Then Martin’s black sedan entered the driveway.
He stepped out carrying the estate binder Ryan had always mocked. Beside him was Sheriff Daniel Cole holding an emergency order signed by a judge.
Ryan laughed.
“Claire brought an audience.”
Martin climbed the steps.
“No, Ryan. Claire brought proof.”
He opened the binder and showed him the certified deed.
Only one name appeared on it.
Mine.
Then he produced the postnuptial agreement. It confirmed that Hawthorne House and its thirty-two acres belonged solely to me, and Ryan’s right to remain there could be revoked.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You told me this mansion was yours.”
“We’re married,” Ryan snapped. “Half of everything is mine.”
“Not inherited property protected by an enforceable agreement,” Martin said.
Three years earlier, I had paid $280,000 to keep Ryan’s consulting company alive. He thought I was simply rescuing him. Martin had made sure I was also protecting myself.
Sheriff Cole handed Ryan the emergency order. It granted me temporary exclusive possession of the house, prohibited him from contacting me, and required him to leave while the case proceeded.
“You have thirty minutes to collect essential belongings,” Cole said.
Ryan finally stopped smiling.
Vanessa rushed upstairs and returned minutes later dragging her suitcases.
“Where are you going?” Ryan demanded.
“Somewhere that isn’t built on lies.”
Then she left.
Ryan turned toward me.
“You planned this.”
I raised my marked arm.
“No. You created this when you decided you could throw me out of my own home.”
Martin then handed me another folder.

Inside were hotel charges, jewelry receipts, and transfers from Ryan’s failing company to an account linked to Vanessa.
The mansion was only the first thing Ryan had mistaken for his.
