Chapter 6 - What I Kept

People continue asking what became of Grant’s mistress.

They look for punishment because it offers a neat conclusion.

It had become waking up in a house no one was lying in.

It had become drinking coffee from my mother’s blue mug without Grant criticizing my attachment to sentimental belongings.

It had become opening the windows on a rainy morning and discovering that silence could offer safety rather than loneliness.

It had become learning that dignity does not mean staying calm so others can stay comfortable. Sometimes it is holding your composure until the truth has a chance to speak.

I never recovered my former life.

I could love without making myself smaller.

Family no longer meant jewelry used to shame a woman at dinner.

And inheritance meant more than precious metal, real estate, or legal documents.

It means recognizing when a door must be closed.

It means allowing people to face the consequences of their actions.

It means hearing your mother’s wisdom so often that it becomes your own voice.

The bracelet really was the missing piece from my mother’s estate inventory.
