Chapter 8

At the front door, Diane hugged me longer than usual.
Scott thanked us for dinner.
Sophie announced that Grandma’s mashed potatoes deserved “at least nine out of ten.”
Ethan whispered to me, “Best dinner ever.”
Melissa heard him.
“Get in the car.”
He grinned.
After they left, Daniel and I stood in the kitchen among dirty glasses and leftover gravy.
He began loading the dishwasher.
Finally, he said, “I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For all the times I told you that Melissa was just being Melissa.”
I waited.
“I thought avoiding the argument meant I wasn’t choosing sides.”
“And?”
“And I was choosing hers.”
That mattered more than another apology from Melissa.
I had never expected my sister-in-law to protect me.
I had expected my husband to be my partner.
Daniel kissed my forehead.
“Next time she starts, I’ll say something.”
“Before we get home?”
He smiled sheepishly.
“Before we get home.”
Three months later, the Carter family gathered for Diane’s sixty-fifth birthday.
This time, Melissa hosted.
When Daniel and I arrived, she was standing over a tray of slightly burned chicken.
She looked at me.
I looked at the chicken.
Then slowly raised an eyebrow.
Melissa pointed the serving spoon at me.
“Don’t.”
I laughed.
“So I’m not allowed to say it looks scraped off a cafeteria tray?”
Scott nearly dropped the salad bowl.
Diane burst out laughing.
Even Melissa eventually covered her face and laughed.
Then she looked at me.
“Okay. I deserved that.”
“Absolutely.”
She handed me the serving spoon.
“Help me save dinner?”
I took it.
Not because everything had been forgotten.
Not because our relationship was suddenly perfect.
But because something had changed.
Melissa still had a sharp tongue.
Daniel still disliked confrontation.
Diane still worried too much about keeping the family together.
And I was still learning that silence can look like patience when it is really permission.
But the Carter family had one new rule at dinner.
May you like
If you served an insult, you had better be prepared to eat it yourself.
And nobody ever criticized Diane’s mashed potatoes again.
