Chapter 1 - The Slap

My sister-in-law slapped me across the face at my own anniversary dinner, in front of my children, because I had the nerve to put food on my plate before serving hers.
“You clearly forgot where you stand in this family,” she whispered. Her hand stayed suspended in the air for a second after the blow, as though she expected everyone in the room to agree that what she had done was somehow justified. Madison looked almost satisfied. As if hitting me at the dining table I had spent all afternoon setting had restored some invisible hierarchy she believed I had violated.
I did not look at her first. I looked at my husband, Ethan. He stayed in his chair. He did not ask whether I was all right.

He did not tell his sister to leave. He did not defend me. He simply lowered his eyes to the linen napkin on his lap, studying it as though the weave of the fabric had suddenly become the most important thing in the world. The sting spread across my cheek.
Then my gaze shifted back to Madison. More specifically, to the necklace around her throat. A heavy vintage sapphire pendant rested against her collarbone, surrounded by tiny diamonds that caught the chandelier light every time she moved. And just like that, the slap stopped being the most shocking thing in the room.
