Chapter 6

I almost dropped the phone.
Grace looked horrified.
“She wanted to show me?”
“It wasn’t supposed to be dangerous.”
“She left our three-week-old daughter alone in water.”
“She was right nearby.”
“No.”
My voice rose.
“She was in my bedroom.”
“It’s twenty feet away.”
I felt something inside me finally snap.
“You knew.”
“What?”
“You knew she was doing something.”
“I knew she wanted to make a video.”
“You asked how long.”
Michael stopped answering.
The truth became obvious.
Diane had planned to record herself giving Nora a bath.
Then deliberately step away.
The intended lesson was apparently that nothing terrible happened.
Proof that I was anxious.
Proof that I was ridiculous.
Proof that my rules about never leaving Nora unattended were excessive.
They wanted evidence to use against me.
Not in court.
Not yet.
Inside my own marriage.
Michael eventually admitted enough.
His mother had been complaining for weeks that I was “obsessed” with safety.
I wouldn’t allow blankets in Nora’s crib.
I insisted everyone wash hands before holding her.
I refused to let Diane kiss her face.
Normal precautions became, in Diane’s story, proof that I was unstable.
Michael had listened.
Then joined in.
The bathroom recording was supposed to embarrass me.
Diane planned to show me that she could briefly leave Nora unattended and “nothing happened.”
Except Grace walked in.
And once someone else saw it, the experiment became indefensible.
Diane deleted the video.
She admitted that later.
But deleting it did not save her.
Because her phone automatically backed up videos.
My attorney eventually obtained a preserved copy through the legal process.
I didn’t watch the entire thing immediately.
Months passed before I could.
The recording was worse than the hallway footage.
It began with Diane positioning the phone.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then said:
“Claire is going to learn today that babies aren’t made of glass.”
She smiled.
My stomach turned.
She bathed Nora.
Then looked toward the doorway.
Michael’s voice could be heard.
“You sure?”
Diane replied:
“Trust me.”
Then she stepped away.
The camera continued recording.
Nora moved.
Cried.
No adult entered.
Then Grace appeared.
The moment she saw the bathtub, her entire body changed.
She didn’t look toward the camera.
Didn’t hesitate.
She simply grabbed my daughter.
That mattered to me.
Grace hadn’t entered trying to expose anyone.
May you like
She entered trying to protect Nora.
Everything else came afterward.
