Chapter 10

Marcus was arrested before sunrise.
Officers found his SUV abandoned near an industrial park.
A search team followed security footage to one of the warehouses controlled by his company.
Emma was inside.
Alive.
Her wrists were bound.
She was dehydrated and frightened but conscious.
When police told her Noah was safe, she began crying so hard she could not answer questions for several minutes.
Richard was found two days later.
Not by police.
He walked into a federal office after seeing Marcus’s arrest reported on television.
Adam met his father in a small interview room.
Richard looked older than the photograph.
Thinner.
Tired.
He stood when Adam entered.
Neither man knew what to say.
Six years of mourning stood between them.
Adam finally whispered.
“You let me think you were dead.”
Richard’s eyes filled.
“I thought it was the only way Marcus would stop watching you.”
“You could have told me.”
“I tried.”
Adam frowned.
Richard reached into his coat and removed a stack of envelopes.
Every one addressed to Adam.
Every one returned.
Some stamped unknown recipient.
Others marked refused.
Adam recognized the handwriting on one notation.
Beatrice’s.
His mother had intercepted them.
All of them.
Adam sank into the chair.
“My whole life is a lie.”
Richard sat across from him.
“No.”
Adam looked up.
“Some parts were.”
Richard’s voice softened.
“But Sophia is real. Your children are real. What you choose next is real.”
Adam thought about Noah.
About Sophia.
About the unborn child she still carried.
About the laundry room.
About his mother’s hands blocking the washer door.
Then he nodded.
For the first time in days, he knew exactly where to begin.
Emma reunited with Noah at the hospital.
Sophia carried the baby into the room.
Emma saw him.
Her face collapsed.
“My baby.”
Sophia placed Noah gently into her arms.
Emma pressed him against her chest.
“I’m sorry.”
Sophia sat beside her.
“You don't apologize for surviving.”
Emma cried.
“I thought he was gone.”
“No.”
Sophia smiled through tears.
“He was waiting for you.”
Adam stood in the doorway.
His feelings toward Noah had changed completely.
For three days he had believed the infant was his wife's secret.
Then his mother's evidence.
Then a complication.
Now he understood what Noah really was.
A child born into a war he knew nothing about.
A child who deserved none of it.
Emma looked at Adam.
“I’m sorry you found out like this.”
Adam shook his head.
“You don’t owe me anything.”
He paused.
“Except maybe the truth when you're ready.”
Emma nodded.
“You’ll have it.”
Richard appeared behind Adam.
Emma stiffened.
Then relaxed.
“You came.”
Richard nodded.
“It’s over.”
Emma looked toward Noah.
“No.”
She smiled faintly.
“It’s beginning.”
The investigation lasted more than a year.
Marcus was charged with numerous offenses related to financial fraud, conspiracy, abduction, and obstruction.
The records on the memory card opened investigations into several companies and accounts.
Daniel Price was eventually found alive in another state.
He had fled after Marcus threatened him.
He had believed Emma was safer if he disappeared.
He was wrong.
But he returned and testified.
Beatrice accepted a plea agreement.
Her role in the financial crimes was smaller than Marcus’s.
Her betrayal of her own family was not.
Adam attended only one of her hearings.
Afterward, Beatrice tried to speak with him.
“Adam.”
He stopped but did not turn around.
“I loved you.”
He looked back.
“I believe you.”
Hope appeared in her face.
Then he continued.
“But love without truth becomes control.”
Her expression fell.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You protected the people who frightened you.”
He looked toward Sophia waiting at the end of the hallway.
May you like
“That’s different.”
Then he left.
