The next morning, I woke before sunrise. I went to the kitchen and found an old metal coffee tin on a shelf. Inside were recipe cards. Ruth's handwriting again. Pancakes. Lemon chicken. Apple cake.

Then, halfway through, a card without a recipe. HELEN'S FIRST BREAKFAST HERE.

On the back, Ruth had written: Burned toast. Two eggs. Terrible coffee. She ate everything.

I smiled. Another card: HELEN'S FIRST DAY WITHOUT ASKING WHETHER SHE SHOULD GO HOME.

Another: HELEN PAINTED THE FRONT DOOR BLUE. Hated it. Painted it green the next morning.

Another: HELEN LAUGHED TODAY WITHOUT LOOKING AROUND AFTERWARD.

I stopped. Not because it was dramatic. Because it was ordinary. Ruth had preserved Mom's recovery through mundane details. Toast. Paint. Coffee. Laughter. Not milestones. Moments.

I understood suddenly why she left the cottage to us. Not as shelter. As evidence. A life could become ordinary again. Perhaps ordinary was not the absence of a story. Perhaps it was the privilege of writing one without fear.

Mara entered wearing Ruth's old robe. “Please tell me that robe wasn't stored here for fourteen years.” “It was in a sealed bag.” “That does not reassure me.”

I handed her the cards. She read them. Her joking expression softened. “We should give these to Mom.” “Yes.”

Then something fell from between two cards. A small folded note. Not Ruth's handwriting. Dad's. I recognized it immediately. Mara unfolded it.

Ruth, Helen told me about the cottage. Thank you for giving her a place where she learned she didn't need me.

Mara looked at me. I read the next line.

That sounds strange written down, but I mean it. I hope she never stays with me because she needs somewhere to stay. I hope she stays because she chooses our life every morning.
