Chapter 13

“Sofia used Elena’s original plans.”
The van fell silent except for Lily’s sobbing.
“Why?”
“Because compartment 317 isn’t underground,” Isabella whispered. “It’s hidden behind the nursery wall.”
The wall I had painted myself.
The wall beneath the window.
I remembered a narrow metal plate the contractors said covered an old heating access. It had been sealed before I began painting.
My father had built his final secret inside the room meant for my child.
Isabella gripped my sleeve.
“Whatever is behind that wall,” she said, “Sofia believes it proves who Lily’s father really is.”
I stared at her.
Lily’s birth certificate had no father listed.
Elena had protected that name more carefully than her own life.
“Who is he?”
Before Isabella could answer, her eyes closed.
The van swerved around a corner.
My phone lit up with a new message.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
It showed Sofia standing inside the pink nursery.
Behind her, the wall had been opened.
A steel compartment waited in the darkness.
Beside Sofia stood a thin elderly man wearing my father’s ring.
Vittorio Moretti was alive.
Beneath the photograph was a single sentence.
