Chapter 13 - WHY GABRIEL DISAPPEARED

Before Maria, Gabriel had a daughter with a young woman named Ana Alvarez.

That child was Elena Maria Alvarez.

Elena’s mother.

Gabriel and Ana never married.

Eventually Ana married another man, and for years he believed Elena was his biological daughter.

“When I started cooperating with investigators,” Gabriel said, “the people stealing from those workers began looking for leverage.”

They discovered both families.

Maria.

Me.

Ana.

Little Elena.

“My lawyer said the safest option was separation.”

“Witness protection?”

“Not exactly the version you see in movies. Relocation, changed records, sealed testimony.”

“Why tell Mom you were gone forever?”

“I asked her to tell you I wouldn’t return.”

“That isn’t the same as telling me you were dead.”

“No.”

“But she knew what an eight-year-old would believe.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The criminal case ended years later.

“So why didn’t you come back then?”

That was the question that mattered.

His answer came slowly.

“Cowardice.”

Elena and I both stared.

“By then you were fourteen,” he continued. “Maria had built a stable life. You hated me.”

“You didn’t know that.”

“She wrote to me.”

My chest tightened.

“She stayed in contact?”

“Occasionally.”

“And my mother decided I didn’t deserve the truth?”

“No.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“She kept telling me to tell you myself.”

I said nothing.

“I always found another reason to wait.”

The danger wasn’t fully gone.

Then I had school.

Then university.

Then business.

Then money.

Then Maria became ill.

“I came back before she died.”

My throat closed.

“She saw you?”

“Yes.”

“Did she forgive you?”

Gabriel’s eyes filled.

“No.”

That answer mattered.

“She loved me,” he said. “But she told me love and forgiveness were not the same thing.”

For the first time all day, I heard my mother clearly in someone else’s words.

Then Elena asked:

“Why did my mother never tell me?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Because I failed her too.”

He had tried to contact his daughter when she became an adult.

By then she was furious.

She wanted nothing from him except one thing.

“If something happens to me,” she told him, “make sure my daughter someday knows where she comes from.”

That daughter was Elena.

Gabriel had carried the promise for sixteen years.

And once again…

he had waited too long.
