Chapter 1

My three-year-old daughter broke into the one room my billionaire employer had kept locked since his wife died—and somehow uncovered a hidden message Amelia had left behind. I thought Emma had simply found an old home video, until a secret panel opened, a brass key fell into Richard Caldwell’s hand, and Amelia’s recorded voice warned him not to trust his own brother.

My name is Claire Bennett.

For five months, Emma and I had lived at Richard Caldwell’s estate outside Boston, where I worked as his housekeeper.

Richard had one absolute rule.

Nobody entered the west ballroom.

His wife, Amelia, had died nearly three years earlier, and he had preserved that room exactly as she left it.

Then one afternoon, I found Emma barefoot beneath the chandeliers.

She was holding hands with Richard’s two-year-old son, Noah.

“Step, step, turn!”

Noah stumbled.

Then laughed.

I froze.

I had barely heard that child laugh in months.

Richard appeared behind me.

“Claire.”

I prepared to apologize.

Then he saw the television.

Amelia was dancing on the screen.

Not the elegant woman from the portraits.

She wore black leggings and one of Richard’s old sweatshirts, spinning badly and laughing at herself.

Emma copied every move.

Richard stared.

“Who taught her that?”

“Nobody.”

Then I remembered the memory card Emma had found inside an old music box.

Richard restarted the video.

Noah toddled closer.

“Mommy?”

Richard’s face broke.

“Yes, buddy.”

Then Amelia stopped dancing and looked directly into the camera.

“If Noah ever sees this, Richard needs to watch the rest.”

Richard went still.

“You’re going to blame yourself,” Amelia continued. “You’ll close this room because you’ll think changing anything means losing me again.”

Tears filled Richard’s eyes.

“But what happened wasn’t your fault.”

He shut off the television.

“Take the children upstairs.”

Emma shook her head.

“No. There’s another part.”

She pointed behind the cabinet.

Richard moved it.

Nothing.

Then Emma found a tiny blue mark near the baseboard.

Click.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was an envelope bearing Richard’s name.

A brass key fell into his palm.

B-17.

“What does that mean?” I whispered.

Emma answered.

“It’s where the dancing lady kept the truth.”

Richard turned the recording back on.

Amelia appeared holding the same key.

“If you found this, don’t give it to anyone.”

She paused.

“Not your attorney. Not security.”

Then her voice dropped.

“Especially not Daniel.”

Richard went white.

Daniel Caldwell.

His younger brother.

The man who had helped raise Noah after Amelia died.

And the man currently downstairs waiting for dinner.

Footsteps sounded outside the ballroom.

Richard killed the screen.

A shadow appeared beneath the doors.

The handle began to turn.

Emma grabbed my hand.

May you like

And whispered,

“The dancing lady said he can’t have the key.”
