Chapter 10
The question of the reserve took longer.
For weeks, Evelyn, Andrew, Clara, Margaret, and I met around my father's old conference table.
Sometimes we disagreed.
Sometimes Clara became tired and left early.
Sometimes Andrew grew defensive.
Sometimes I became impatient and caught myself.
But slowly, the reserve stopped being a secret account and became what my father should have made it in the beginning.
Transparent.
Audited.
Shared.
We renamed it the Whitmore-Michael Employee Opportunity Fund.
Andrew objected.
"My dad would've hated having his name on it."
"That's why it belongs there," Clara said.
The fund provided education assistance, emergency loans, childcare grants, and career-transition support to employees across the family's businesses.
No hidden promises.
No private favors.
Everything written plainly enough that no child would someday have to discover it in a dusty box.
One afternoon, Andrew stayed behind after a meeting.
He stood in my father's old office looking at the brass clock over the fireplace.
"My dad used to talk about this room."
I turned.
"He remembered it?"
"Very clearly."
"What did he say?"
Andrew smiled.
"He said Uncle David liked to sit behind that enormous desk because it made him look like a judge."
I looked at the desk.
"He wasn't wrong."
"He also said you used to hide underneath it."
I stared at him.
"I did."
"When you were little."
"I remember."
"He remembered too."
I sat on the edge of the desk.
"Did he talk about me much?"
Andrew considered the question.
"More near the end."
"What did he say?"
"That he wondered whether you remembered him."
My throat tightened.
"I did. I just didn't know who I was remembering."
Andrew looked down.
"I think that would have meant something to him."
I nodded.
There wasn't anything else to say.
