Chapter 1

My housekeeper had been dead less than thirty hours when her four-year-old daughter walked into my study, handed me a secret letter, and whispered, “Mommy said you’d know what to do.” By the time I reached the final page, I knew two terrifying things: someone close to me had been hiding the truth, and Lily’s father was a man powerful people desperately wanted to keep secret.

At 7:43 the morning after we buried Claire Bennett, Lily appeared in my doorway wearing moon-print pajamas. Her stuffed rabbit dangled beneath one arm, while her other hand held a wrinkled cream envelope.

“Mommy told me to give you this.”

My name was written across the front.

FOR ADRIAN MORETTI. NO ONE ELSE.

“When did she give it to you?”

“Before the hospital,” Lily whispered. “She said to wait until she went far away.”

My chest tightened.

Claire had worked in my Manhattan home for three years. I’d sat beside her during her final hours, arranged her funeral, and refused every suggestion that Lily should immediately be sent somewhere “more suitable.”

But Claire had never mentioned this letter.

Lily sat on the rug beside her rabbit. “Mommy said you would know what to do.”

That nearly broke me.

Claire knew exactly who I was. She’d watched executives lower their voices around me, attorneys arrive with sealed documents, and powerful men suddenly become careful when Adrian Moretti entered a room.

She also knew my family controlled legitimate businesses across New York, along with interests nobody discussed openly.

Still, she had trusted me with her daughter.

I opened the envelope.

Three pages slipped out, followed by a small brass key bearing a blue tag.

M.R. BOX 204.

Maya Reyes.

She was a former federal prosecutor turned defense attorney, and one of the few people I knew who feared almost nothing.

Then I read Claire’s first sentence.

Mr. Moretti, before anyone decides Lily’s future, you need to know who she really is.

My pulse slowed.

The next sentence was worse.

There is a truth Thomas and I protected for four years because revealing it sooner would have led dangerous people directly to her.

“What’s it say?” Lily asked.

“It says your mother trusted me.”

“She did.”

Claire’s instructions were painfully specific.

Confront no one. Don’t contact my family physician. Don’t use any laboratory connected to our companies.

Take the key to Maya Reyes.

Open Box 204 with her present.

Preserve everything.

Any blood testing involving Lily had to be handled independently through proper legal channels.

Then came the sentence that made my fingers tighten around the paper.

If you respond as the man everyone fears, Lily may lose the father she has never been allowed to know.

“Are you mad?” Lily whispered.

“No. I’m reading first.”

I called Maya immediately.

“Claire Bennett left me a key.”

Silence.

Then Maya’s voice sharpened. “Are you alone?”

“Lily’s here.”

“Anyone else?”

“No.”

“Good. Don’t call Vincent. Don’t contact your doctor. And whatever you do, don’t tell your fiancée.”

My eyes moved toward the doorway.

Vanessa Romano had spent the night at her father’s Manhattan penthouse after calling my home “too depressing” following Claire’s funeral.

“What’s inside Box 204?”

“Enough to make your next decision very important.”

“Maya.”

“Bring Lily, the original letter, and the key to my office. Tell nobody where you’re going.”

“You knew Claire planned this?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

“I represented a woman who believed someone close to you was manipulating the truth.”

My jaw tightened. “Was she right?”

“That depends on what you do next.”

The call ended.

I looked at Lily. “Get your shoes.”

Minutes later, we slipped through the east garage without alerting anyone.

For twelve years, I had never left my property without Vincent knowing exactly where I was going.

But Claire’s final warning had changed everything.

Trust no one.

Not even family.

And definitely not the woman I was supposed to marry.

As I drove toward Maya’s office with Lily beside me and the key to Box 204 in my pocket, one question kept pounding through my mind.

Who was Lily’s father, and why had someone inside my own world spent four years making sure I never found out?
