Chapter 1

Thirty-two weeks pregnant, I watched my husband walk into his family’s Christmas party with another woman wearing the diamond necklace he had secretly purchased during a hotel stay. Sixty guests were watching when I finally told him, “Since you brought someone, I brought someone too”—but Matthias had no idea that his infidelity was no longer the most dangerous secret I had uncovered.

For forty-three minutes, I had been standing beside the fireplace at the Dre estate outside Greenwich, Connecticut. My swollen feet ached inside my heels, and our unborn daughter kept kicking beneath my burgundy dress.

Then the front doors opened.

Matthias entered with Fiona Vale holding his arm.

Snow clung to his black overcoat, while Fiona’s ivory evening gown and diamond choker glittered beneath the enormous Christmas tree.

I recognized the necklace immediately.

Three weeks earlier, I had seen its receipt hidden inside Matthias’s coat.

My daughter kicked again.

“I know, sweetheart,” I whispered.

Matthias spotted me across the room.

For one brief second, something crossed his face.

Calculation.

Not guilt.

He left Fiona near the entrance and approached me.

“Serena.”

He kissed my cheek.

“You made it.”

“I drove myself.”

“I was going to call.”

“You said you were picking me up.”

“There was a situation downtown.”

I glanced toward Fiona, who had already accepted a glass of champagne.

“She seems like an expensive situation.”

Matthias’s jaw tightened.

“Keep your voice down.”

“My voice is down.”

He glanced around at the bankers, developers, attorneys, and investors filling his parents’ mansion.

“Fiona is handling communications for the Hensley acquisition,” he explained. “Several people here are involved.”

“At Christmas?”

“It’s business.”

“Is the necklace business too?”

His expression changed.

Barely.

But after nine years working as a trauma nurse, I knew how to recognize the smallest signs of panic.

“What necklace?” he asked.

I almost laughed.

Instead, I smiled.

“Never mind.”

Three weeks earlier, I had borrowed Matthias’s laptop to print paperwork for our daughter’s pediatrician. A hotel reservation was already open on the screen.

Two guests.

One suite.

New Haven.

He had told me he was spending that night in Boston.

I photographed the confirmation, then discovered restaurant receipts, a valet charge, and a calendar entry labeled F.V.

I hadn't confronted him.

Because the next morning, something far worse arrived at my attorney’s office.

A sealed envelope bearing my name.

No return address.

Inside was a photocopied document listing Matthias, the Dre estate, and the exact date of tonight’s Christmas party.

There was also a crude diagram of the property.

And beneath it, six words.

Collateral losses within acceptable parameters.

I read that sentence so many times I could recite it from memory.

Someone wasn't simply exposing my husband’s affair.

Someone was planning something involving this house.

And apparently, innocent people were considered acceptable losses.

Now Matthias was standing in front of me, worrying about appearances.

“Tonight needs to go smoothly,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Your parents are here.”

“Yes.”

“Your investors. Your board chairman.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?”

I rested my hand over our daughter.

“Making sure tonight goes smoothly.”

He leaned closer.

“You look strange.”

“I'm pregnant, publicly humiliated, and standing in heels. Pick one.”

“Serena, Fiona is here because—”

“Since you brought someone, I brought someone too.”

Matthias went completely still.

“What?”

May you like

I looked toward the front entrance.

And for the first time that evening, I watched my husband’s confidence begin to disappear.
