Chapter 1

“PLEASE DON'T CRY, MR. DANIEL. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A MOMMY ANYMORE, YOU CAN BORROW MINE.” THE THREE-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHISPERED TO THE $40 BILLION BILLIONAIRE, AND WHAT SHE DID NEXT BROKE HIS HEART.**
“Mr. Daniel? Why are you crying?”
Daniel Hale quickly wiped his cheeks.
“I'm not crying, sweetheart. I'm just tired.”
Three-year-old Lily tilted her little head.
“But your eyes are wet.”
She climbed onto the enormous sofa and gently touched his face.
“When I cry, Mommy holds me until the sadness goes away. Nobody holds you?”
Daniel couldn't speak.
Then Lily wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.
“It's okay, Mr. Daniel. You can cry. I won't tell anybody.”
And for the first time in twenty-eight years, the billionaire began to sob.
But the reason those innocent words shattered him began long before Lily was born.
Twenty-eight years earlier, at a cemetery in New York.
“She's gone, Daniel. Crying won't bring her back.”
Six-year-old Daniel stood trembling beside his mother's grave as snow covered his little black shoes.
“I want Mommy!” he sobbed.
His father, Charles Hale, gripped his shoulder.
“Enough! You're a Hale. Grief doesn't pay bills, and tears don't solve problems.”
That afternoon, Daniel learned to bury his feelings alongside his mother.
By twelve, he'd stopped expecting affection.
By twenty-two, he was wealthy.
By thirty-four, he'd built Hale Meridian Group into an empire worth nearly $40 billion.
Business magazines praised his intelligence and discipline.
Employees called him the Ice King.
Daniel never complained.
His Westchester mansion had fourteen bedrooms, a private lake, acres of woodland, and a dining table seating sixteen.
Yet every evening, he ate alone.
He believed money could protect him from disappointment.
Until Nathan Mercer betrayed him.
Nathan, his closest business partner, secretly leaked confidential acquisition plans to a competitor, costing Daniel nearly $600 million.
As security escorted Nathan away, he delivered one final blow.
“You've built a world where betrayal is the only thing you know how to recognize.”
Those words haunted Daniel more than the lost fortune.
Weeks later, thirty-two-year-old Maria Torres began working as a housekeeper at his estate.
She was hardworking, quiet, and unimpressed by his wealth.
Occasionally, she brought her three-year-old daughter, Lily, when childcare arrangements fell through.
Lily was an adorable little girl with fair skin, round rosy cheeks, and large, expressive brown eyes.
Her light-brown wavy hair was styled into two high pigtails with pink hair ties, while soft bangs framed her innocent face.
She wore a bubblegum-pink dress with puff sleeves, a layered ruffled skirt, and a small pastel backpack with lavender straps.
One afternoon, Daniel found her coloring a green dinosaur wearing a red birthday hat on his kitchen floor.
“Do you live here?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“In this WHOLE house?”
Daniel almost smiled.
“Doesn't it get lonely?”
He had no answer.
Over the following weeks, Lily's laughter gradually softened the mansion's silence.
Then one evening, Nathan's cruel words returned.
Exhausted and overwhelmed by loneliness, Daniel lay on his living-room sofa.
He closed his eyes, pretending to sleep.
He wanted to know whether anyone would notice his sadness.
Minutes later, Lily approached.
“Mr. Daniel?”
He remained still.
She noticed the tears gathering beneath his closed eyelids.
Then her footsteps disappeared.
Daniel's heart sank.
Even a child walks away.
But suddenly, he heard something scraping across the marble hallway.
Drag.
Pause.
Drag.
The sound grew closer.
Daniel opened his eyes.
Lily had returned, struggling to drag something far too heavy for her tiny arms.
She stopped beside the sofa, breathing hard.
“Mr. Daniel,” she whispered, “Mommy says nobody should be sad all alone.”
Daniel sat up.
His eyes fell upon what the little girl had brought him.

And suddenly, the man who owned nearly $40 billion covered his face and wept uncontrollably.
Because what Lily had dragged across that enormous mansion was something all his money had never been able to buy...
