Chapter 3 - The Digital Panopticon

My fingers traced the cracked screen of the iPad as the access logs populated, row after sickening row. Brandon hadn’t just forgotten the camera was there; he had actively utilized it to turn my son’s suffering into his own private, twisted reality show. The timestamps painted a portrait of pure malice.

He had logged into the live feed from his San Diego IP address every single day, precisely during standard meal times: 8:00 AM, 12:30 PM, and 6:00 PM.

My breath caught as I discovered the saved video clips folder. He hadn't just watched; he had recorded. I clicked on a thumbnail from two days ago. The screen flickered to life, showing the stark, gray contrast of the kitchen’s night vision. There was Liam, my tiny, brave boy, dragging a dining chair to the pantry. I watched in silent agony as my son reached for a box of dry cereal, only to find it empty. Liam sat on the linoleum floor, pulling his knees to his chest, his small shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

And then, the audio clicked on. Through the iPad’s speaker, I heard a faint, digitized chuckle coming from the camera’s two-way microphone. Brandon. He had been laughing at a starving eight-year-old from a luxury beachfront resort.

A new, terrifying clarity washed over me. The grief over my mother’s death retreated, replaced by a cold, calculating maternal rage. I didn't collapse. I didn't cry. Instead, I methodically exported the logs, the IP addresses, and every single video clip to a secure cloud drive. I forwarded the flight cancellation receipts and the horrifying note from the refrigerator to my personal email.

With the digital evidence secured in my purse, I pulled out my phone and dialed the local precinct. I asked for the highest-ranking detective on duty in the Special Victims Bureau. It was time to stop playing the grieving wife and start playing the executioner.
