Chapter 9 - THE SILVER VIAL AND THE SECRET

The silver vial felt like a live grenade in my palm.

“To Teresa. Love, Giovanni.”

My mind raced, trying to piece together the fractured timeline of the night Giovanni died.

Teresa had stood in front of thirty-six guests and claimed she found this bottle in Michael’s desk. She used it to prove Michael had swapped the pills, triggering the entire catastrophic chain of events that led to Michael’s death.

But this wasn't Giovanni’s pill bottle.

It was Teresa’s.

“Hannah?”

I jumped, nearly dropping the vial.

Teresa stood in the kitchen doorway, leaning heavily on her cane. She wore a soft blue robe, looking every bit the fragile, loving grandmother who had just reunited with her family.

But as her eyes locked onto the silver vial in my hand, her warm expression vanished, replaced by a cold, terrifying stillness.

“Where did you find that?” Teresa asked softly.

“In the pantry,” I whispered, stepping backward. “Mrs. Moretti… this is your bottle. Not Giovanni’s.”

Teresa didn’t yell. She didn’t panic. She simply walked into the kitchen and carefully closed the heavy swinging doors behind her.

“Give it to me, Hannah,” she said.

“You lied,” I breathed, the horrific realization washing over me. “Michael didn’t swap the pills four years ago. He was in the room, but he didn’t kill Giovanni. You did.”

Teresa stopped. She looked at me for a long time, the silence stretching until it felt suffocating.

Then, she sighed. A deep, heavy sound of a woman who had carried a mountain for far too long.

“Yes,” Teresa said plainly.

I stared at her in absolute shock. “Why? Why would you frame your own son?”

“Because Michael came to me yesterday and told me he was sending me to a facility,” Teresa said, her voice turning to steel. “He told me Vanessa’s family was going to take over the syndicate. He told me he was going to betray Luca. I couldn’t let that happen.”

“So you framed him for murder?!” I cried.

“I protected my family!” Teresa snapped, her eyes flashing with a ruthless intensity I had never seen before. “Giovanni was a monster. He gave my daughter away. He ruled us with terror. The night he died, I found out he was planning to kill Luca because Luca was getting too powerful. So I swapped his pills. And I watched him die.”

I backed up against the counter, terrified of the old woman.

“Michael walked into the room just as Giovanni took his last breath,” Teresa continued. “He panicked and ran. He thought I was asleep. But yesterday, when he threatened to exile me, I knew I had to remove him. I used my own pill bottle to ignite Luca’s rage. I knew Luca would eliminate the threat.”

“You manipulated all of us,” I whispered. “You caused the shootout. You caused Michael’s death.”

“Michael made his choices!” Teresa said fiercely. “And Giovanni got exactly what he deserved at the docks.”

“Luca needs to know,” I said, turning toward the door.

“No!” Teresa lunged forward, grabbing my wrist with surprising strength. Her eyes were desperate. “If you tell Luca, it will destroy him. He just got his sister back. He just found peace. If he knows his mother is a murderer, it will break his heart. Let the past stay buried, Hannah. For your mother’s sake.”

I looked at the old woman. She wasn’t a helpless victim. She was the true mastermind of the Moretti family. She had outplayed them all to protect the people she loved.

Slowly, I pulled my wrist from her grasp. I placed the silver vial on the counter.

“I won’t tell him,” I whispered. “But I will never look at you the same way again.”

I walked out of the kitchen, leaving the matriarch alone in the dark.

I thought the secrets were finally over. I thought the blood had stopped spilling.

But the next morning, a black envelope arrived in the mail, addressed directly to me.

Inside was a single piece of paper with three words typed on it.
