The Family Services office was almost empty when Hannah and Marlene arrived the next morning.
Marlene told Laura Bennett everything.
The hidden grandson.
The Christmas footage.
Raymond’s phone call.
The threat.
Laura photographed the messages.
Then she looked at Marlene.
“You understand this may affect your employment.”
“Yes.”
“Why come forward now?”
Marlene looked at Hannah.
“Because I watched her lose everything for something I knew wasn’t true.”
That afternoon, Hannah and Marlene drove to Raymond’s office.
Ethan had offered nothing.
Hannah had not asked.
She wanted it that way.
Raymond looked up from his desk.
His face changed when he saw Marlene.
“Hannah—”
“You knew Ellie wasn’t alone.”
He sighed.
“You don’t understand how close I was to losing—”
“You filed a report saying my daughter was abandoned.”
