Chapter 2

I watched the video once with Noah still clinging to me, and that was enough.

The fire truck hit the wall. Megan slapped him. Diane laughed. Noah cried and insisted he had done nothing wrong. The recording preserved the exact moment they had expected me to minimize, forgive, and eventually pretend never happened.

For six years, Daniel had been able to reduce every insult to a misunderstanding and every boundary I set to “family drama.” This time there was nothing for me to reinterpret.

I saved the recording and kept the deed, mortgage papers, down-payment records, medication, and the other document I had packed before leaving together in one place.

Daniel had told me to file for divorce because he was certain the threat would frighten me back into the apartment.

Instead, I took him at his word.

When the summons reached him, the argument stopped being something he could control from our living room.

But the summons wasn’t what changed his confidence.

It was the document.

The one I had carried out in that backpack while he stood at the door telling me to leave our son behind.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

And for the first time since this began, he understood that I hadn’t walked out planning to come back and apologize.

I had walked out prepared to use what I had been carrying all along.
