Chapter 16 - THE SHOES THAT STARTED A LIE

Months later, Sophia found the original photograph from the foundation weekend.
Matteo guiding Emma through a crowd.
His hand at the small of her back.
Emma looking irritated.
Sophia framed it.
Emma objected.
“I was angry in that picture.”
“You look beautiful.”
“I was considering violence.”
“Also beautiful.”
Matteo sided with his mother.
Betrayal.
The photograph eventually remained.
Beside it, Sophia kept another.
The wedding.
Emma and Matteo laughing after the ceremony.
Two images.
One lie.
One truth.
Sophia once told Emma:
“I thought those shoes meant Matteo had finally trusted someone.”
“They meant I was exhausted and directionally challenged.”
“I know.”
“Then why do you keep telling people the story romantically?”
Sophia smiled.
“Because my version is better.”
Emma surrendered.
There are some battles nobody wins against an Italian mother.
But privately, Emma understood why the shoes mattered.
The first time they sat beside Matteo’s, they created an assumption.
Emma belonged there.
She didn’t.
Not yet.
That assumption became useful to Matteo.
Useful to Sophia.
Dangerous to Bianca.
But still false.
The second time Sophia found those shoes, everything had changed.
Emma had placed them there herself.
That was the difference between possession and belonging.
One is decided by someone else.
The other is chosen.
Matteo had spent most of his life surrounded by people who wanted something from his name.
Access.
Protection.
Money.
Influence.
Emma had rejected two million dollars before she even truly knew him.
At first, that fascinated him.
Later, he understood why.
Her refusal wasn’t proof she was impossible to buy.
People aren’t products at all.
That had been the lesson.
A simple one.
One Matteo should probably have learned before thirty-nine.
Emma reminded him of that regularly.
Especially whenever Sophia mentioned grandchildren.
“Mother.”
“I asked a harmless question.”
“You asked Emma whether the nursery should face east.”
“The morning light is better.”
Emma laughed.
“I’m not pregnant.”
“I prepare.”
Matteo closed his eyes.
Emma squeezed his hand.
Powerful men, she discovered, remained completely helpless against determined mothers.

It kept him humble.
A public service.
