The older woman sat completely motionless in her hospital bed as the devastating reality settled over her. She had attempted to eliminate her daughter-in-law for a fortune that did not exist, accidentally killed her only son in the process, and was now facing severe criminal charges.
“The most tragic part is not that you picked the wrong target, Kristina,” Nora said as she stood up to leave. “The most tragic part is that you still believe the only real problem was that your plan failed.”
Two days later, Heather Perkinson made one final desperate attempt to secure financial gain by aligning with Kristina. “You are welcome to file a claim through probate court,” Wayne Chappell replied smoothly. “However, the primary creditors have already submitted claims totaling over eight million dollars, so there will be nothing left once those debts are cleared.”
Heather Perkinson crumpled the paper in her hand, realizing she was left with nothing.
Nora looked at the younger woman with genuine pity. “Your mistake was assuming that having a baby with a married man automatically entitled you to the life his wife worked hard to pay for.”
“He lied to me about everything,” Heather Perkinson muttered softly.
“He lied to me for a decade as well,” Nora replied. “I can understand your pain, but understanding you does not mean I am going to hand over my life’s work to you.”
Nora then turned her attention to Kristina. “And your mistake was even worse. You turned your son into an unhealthy obsession and treated me like an enemy simply because I could not give you a grandchild.”
“You destroyed this family!” Kristina shrieked from her bed.
Nora shook her head slowly as she walked toward the door. “I financed this family for ten long years. You destroyed it all by yourself.”
The state prosecutor’s office seized the forged will as critical physical evidence in an ongoing fraud and forgery investigation against Heather Perkinson, while formal criminal charges were filed against Kristina for attempted murder and manslaughter. Given her severe medical status, Kristina was placed under permanent state custody at a specialized medical facility, stripped of her independence entirely.
Months later, Heather Perkinson gave birth to a healthy baby boy, and official DNA testing confirmed Edgar was the father. As expected, Edgar’s estate was completely consumed by his outstanding debts, leaving no inheritance for the child.
