Chapter 5 - Letting Go of the Burden

More importantly, their agreement was no longer required for the next step.
The process had already begun when I took Sofía to the emergency room. The injuries had already been documented. The hoodie had been preserved. The photographs already existed. The twenty-two-second recording already existed.
And now Sofía was going to be able to speak outside the family system that had spent years deciding which truths were convenient enough to hear.
That was why, when she reached for my hand before the interview, I did not give her a speech. I did not tell her what to say. I did not remind her of Mauricio’s words. I did not ask her to make anybody understand.
I just held her hand.
She looked small walking beside me, but not fragile in the way adults sometimes mean when they talk about children. She had already done the brave part. She had told me what happened even after an adult warned her that things inside his house were supposed to stay there.
The responsibility was mine now. Not to make her repeat it until every relative was satisfied. Not to turn her injuries into a family trial around the kitchen table. Not to make her carry the burden of convincing adults who had already chosen comfort once.
My job was to protect the space around her truth.

When the staff member came for her, Sofía tightened her fingers around mine for a second. Then she released them. She walked forward. The door opened. She stepped inside. The door closed behind her.
I stayed in the hallway with my phone in my palm and the purple hoodie waiting back at home in its paper bag.
