Chapter 7 - Elena's Just-In-Case Fund

Angela sat frozen, hand pressed to her mouth, as she watched the most powerful man she’d ever known move mountains in real time.

Not for a business deal worth hundreds of millions, but for a 7-year-old boy with two missing front teeth and a love of dinosaurs he’d never met.

Zoe, oblivious to the weight of the moment, crawled over the blanket and pulled herself up against Angela’s leg.

That same stubborn, serious little frown on her face, as if she too understood that something important was happening.

But Michael’s next words would reveal a twist even Angela hadn’t seen coming.

Nobody expected the truth that came out next. Not even the woman who thought she already knew everything about this family.

There’s something else, Michael said, pacing the patio slowly, phone still in his hand.

Something I never told you because Elena asked me not to. Angela frowned, confused. What do you mean?

Michael exhaled, running a hand through his hair. Elena set up a fund years ago before we were even married. Private account, separate from the business, separate from everything.

She called it her just in case fund. She said his voice caught for a second.

She said someday someone in our life would need help fast and she didn’t want them to have to beg for it or wait on paperwork.

She wanted it ready sitting there untouched. He looked at Angela.

I never touched it. Honestly, I forgot about it half the time with the company, with Zoe, with everything.

It slipped my mind, but it’s still there.

growing interest for 6 years. Last I checked, it was worth around $210,000.

“Angela’s hand flew to her chest.”

“Mr.Carter, Elena loved you,” Michael said simply.

“She talked about you all the time.

She used to say you were the only person who ever made her feel like family instead of just an employer’s daughter.

If she were here right now, she wouldn’t hesitate for a single second.

And honestly, neither should I.

Angela began to cry again, but this time it wasn’t grief.

It was something closer to disbelief. Relief crashing over her so suddenly her knees felt weak.

I can’t accept that, she whispered, even as every part of her wanted to.

“That’s Zoe’s.

That’s her mother’s gift to her.

Zoe has more money than she’ll ever need in three lifetimes,” Michael said gently.

What she doesn’t have is a mother.

She has you instead.

And if you weren’t here, I don’t know what kind of father I’d be right now, Angela.

Honestly, I don’t.

He crouched down in front of her chair. Let me do this.

Not as your employer. As someone who owes you a debt I can never fully repay. His phone buzzed.

His assistant confirming the hospital’s financial office was on the line.

Michael answered, walked a few steps away.

And within minutes, Angela heard him speaking in the same commanding, precise tone he used when closing nine figure deals, except this time every word was about Marcus, confirming the surgical date, authorizing an immediate wire

transfer, asking about post-operative care, about a private room, about whether the hospital had a family housing program nearby so Angela wouldn’t have to drive back and forth exhausted every single day during recovery.

When he hung up, he turned back to her.

And for the first time in 2 years, Michael Carter looked like a man who had found a piece of himself he thought he’d lost.

“It’s done,” he said.

“Surgery is confirmed for next Thursday.

Dr.Reyes’s team.

Full payment authorized this morning.

They’re holding a family suite at the Ronald Macdonald House, three blocks from the hospital for as long as you need it.”

May you like

Angela couldn’t speak.

She simply stood, crossed the small distance between them, and hugged him, something she had never once done in 20 years of working in that house. Michael, startled for half a second, hugged her back just as tightly. Zoe, watching from the blanket, let out a delighted squeal and clapped her hands together as if she understood in her own small way that something beautiful had just happened.
