Chapter 1 - THE WAITRESS WHO DEFIED DON MERCER

"Touch me like that again, and I'll destroy whatever matters most to you." Those were the words I said to Roman Mercer, Chicago's most feared mafia boss, after he grabbed my waist while I was serving dinner. Eight dangerous men went completely silent. One reached inside his jacket, but Roman stopped him with two fingers. I was certain I'd lose my job—or worse. Instead, the next morning, my manager called with an unbelievable offer. Roman Mercer wanted me as his personal server, at triple my salary, with full benefits. But when I asked why, my manager hesitated before answering.
My name is Tessa Vaughn.
I was twenty-eight years old, working double shifts at Hawthorne House, an exclusive restaurant in downtown Chicago.
I wasn't wealthy.
I wasn't connected.
And I certainly wasn't the kind of woman who should threaten a mafia boss.
But that night, Roman Mercer crossed a line.
He was thirty-nine.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Pale gray eyes.
A thin scar through his eyebrow.
Dark tattoos disappearing beneath the collar of an expensive charcoal suit.
His legitimate companies owned luxury hotels, restaurants, shipping businesses, and waterfront properties.
But everyone in Chicago knew there was another side to his empire.
People called him Don Mercer.
And even dangerous men were careful around him.
That evening, I was assigned to serve a private dinner for Roman and eight of his associates.
Everything seemed normal.
Until I leaned across him to remove an empty glass.
His hand settled around my waist.
And stayed there.
Not an accident.
Not a misunderstanding.
I froze.
Then turned toward him.
"Take your hand off me."
He looked up.
For one second, nobody moved.
His hand finally withdrew.
But something inside me had already snapped.
"Touch me like that again, and I'll ruin whatever part of your life you actually care about."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
One of his men, Grant Holloway, slowly reached inside his jacket.
Roman raised two fingers.
Grant stopped.
My knees were shaking beneath my apron.
But I refused to look away.
Roman studied my face.
Then asked quietly,
"What's your name?"
"Tessa Vaughn."
He repeated it.
"Tessa."
I tightened my grip on my tray.
"You wanted my name. Now use it next time instead of your hands."
Someone inhaled sharply.
Roman leaned back.
I waited for him to get angry.
Instead, he said one word.
"Understood."
I turned around and walked out.
The second I entered the kitchen, everyone stared.
My manager, Miles, hurried toward me.
"What did you do?"
"What he deserved."
"Do you have any idea who that man is?"
"Yes."
"No, Tessa. You obviously don't!"
I removed my apron.
"I know he put his hands on me."
Miles looked horrified.
"Roman Mercer practically owns this entire neighborhood."
"Then he can afford to buy himself some manners."
"Tessa!"
"I'm going home."
"You're scheduled until midnight."
I looked at him.
"Then fire me."
I sounded brave.
But the moment I stepped outside, I nearly burst into tears.
Because I needed that job.
Desperately.
Six months earlier, my father had died after a stroke.
He left behind medical bills, an old pickup truck, and my twenty-year-old brother, Eli.
Eli had been born with a serious heart condition.
Our mother died when he was nine.
And although he was technically my half brother, I'd practically raised him.
Now I was responsible for everything.
Rent.
Groceries.
Medical appointments.
Expensive prescriptions.
I worked sixty hours a week.
We were eleven days behind on rent.
And I'd just threatened Chicago's most powerful mafia boss.
When I got home, Eli was sitting on the couch with his laptop.
"You're early."
I dropped my bag.
"Apparently, I'm excellent at ruining my career."
He frowned.
"What happened?"
"A customer touched me."
His expression changed immediately.
"Who?"
I hesitated.
"Roman Mercer."
Eli stopped breathing for a second.
"You threatened Roman Mercer?"
"He touched me."
"Tessa, I'm not saying you were wrong. I'm saying that man could buy our entire apartment building without checking his bank account."
"I know."
"What about your job?"
"I might lose it."
Eli looked down.
"My medication..."
"I'll figure it out."
"You always say that."
"Because I always do."
He sighed.
"You can't keep destroying yourself trying to take care of me."
I sat beside him.
"You're my brother."
"I'm twenty, Tess. I can work."
"You're finishing school."
"But you're exhausted."
I tried to smile.
"I just have terrible hobbies."
He laughed weakly.
But that night, I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I pictured Roman Mercer's expression.
Calm.
Unreadable.
Almost curious.
At 7:12 the next morning, my phone rang.
Miles.
I answered immediately.
"Just say it. Am I fired?"
"No."
I sat up.
"What?"
"Roman Mercer made a request."
My stomach dropped.
"What kind of request?"
"He wants you assigned exclusively to his private events."
I stared at the wall.
"Absolutely not."
"Tessa, listen."
"No."
"Triple your hourly rate."
I went quiet.
"Thirty guaranteed hours a week, whether he books the room or not."
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Full health insurance."
I stopped breathing.
Eli's prescriptions.
His cardiology appointments.
The medical bills piled beside our refrigerator.
Miles continued.
"There's also a transportation allowance."
I closed my eyes.
It was everything I needed.
And it was coming from the one man I wanted to avoid.
"Why?" I whispered.
Miles hesitated.
"Tessa, he was very specific."
"About what?"
"He said you could refuse the offer. No consequences. But if you accepted, he wanted to meet with you before your first shift."
I swallowed.
"To apologize?"
"I don't know."
"Then what did he say?"
Miles lowered his voice.
"He asked whether your last name was Vaughn... and whether your father's name was Daniel."
My entire body went cold.
Daniel Vaughn.
My father.
The man we'd buried six months earlier.
"How does he know my dad?"
"I have no idea."
I stood up so quickly my chair scraped against the floor.
"Did he say anything else?"
Another pause.
Then Miles answered.
"He said your father once saved his life."
I stared at the phone.
My father had been a quiet mechanic who barely earned enough to support our family.
He'd never mentioned knowing Roman Mercer.
Never mentioned the mafia.
Never mentioned saving anyone's life.
Then my phone vibrated with a message from an unknown number.
ROMAN MERCER: "Tessa, I owe your father a debt. And I think you deserve to know why."
Before I could reply, another message appeared.
"Please don't mention my name to Eli until we've talked."
My heart began pounding.
May you like
Because I had never told Roman Mercer that I had a brother.
And suddenly, I realized the mafia boss I'd threatened the night before knew far more about my family than he should have.
