The Phone in Vanessa’s Hand

Chapter 05 - The Phone in Vanessa’s Hand

Matteo’s first reaction was not anger.

It was panic.

“My phone.”

Vanessa held it loosely, as though she had found a napkin on the floor rather than a child’s private connection to the world.

“You left it in the dining room.”

“No, I didn’t.”

She smiled at him. “You’re upset. You probably forgot.”

Claire watched Matteo’s shoulders curve inward, the familiar posture of someone being told his memory could not be trusted. She stepped nearer without thinking.

Luca noticed again.

Luca noticed everything once he decided to look.

“Give it to him,” he said.

Vanessa looked wounded. “Of course.”

She extended the phone.

Matteo grabbed it and immediately turned the screen toward himself.

His face changed.

“What?” Luca asked.

Matteo tapped twice, then looked up.

“My voice memo app is open.”

Vanessa laughed softly. “Children press things.”

“I don’t use voice memos.”

Luca held out his hand.

Matteo hesitated only a second before giving him the phone.

The latest recording was forty-seven seconds long.

Started nine minutes earlier.

Luca played it.

At first, only footsteps. A door. Vanessa’s breath.

Then her voice, low and urgent.

“Carlo, he found the note.”

A male voice answered, muffled but clear enough.

“Then get the boy away from him.”

Claire’s skin went cold.

Matteo went perfectly still.

Vanessa reached for the phone.

Luca lifted it beyond her grasp without looking at her.

The recording continued.

Vanessa whispered, “Luca won’t sign anything tonight now.”

Carlo’s voice came again.

“He will if the boy looks unstable enough.”

Then the recording ended.

The library held that silence for a long time.

Vanessa’s eyes glistened with manufactured shock.

“I have no idea what that is.”

Luca turned the phone over slowly in his hand.

“You called my brother.”

“No.”

“On my son’s phone?”

“No.”

“And discussed making Matteo look unstable?”

Her face changed.

For the first time, she looked less like a bride defending herself and more like a woman recalculating the exits.

“You don’t understand what Carlo has done for this family.”

Luca’s voice lowered. “I understand what he has done to mine.”

“You make everything about Matteo.”

“He is my son.”

“He is also the reason you’re still sleeping in a mausoleum.”

Matteo flinched.

Luca stepped toward Vanessa.

Not fast.

Not loud.

But something ancient and protective moved with him.

Claire had seen men perform intimidation. Luca did not perform it. He simply allowed it into the room.

“Careful,” he said.

Vanessa swallowed.

Then she made the mistake of looking at Claire.

“This is her fault.”

Claire did not move.

“She has been turning Matteo against me for weeks.”

Luca looked at Claire.

Claire’s heart sank, because accusation did not have to be true to become useful.

“She sneaks him food,” Vanessa said. “She speaks with him behind closed doors. She interferes with discipline. She has no family here, no references worth calling, and suddenly she is the moral authority in my home?”

“Your home?” Luca asked.

The words landed softly.

Vanessa froze.

Claire did not know whether to feel grateful or terrified.

Luca turned to Enzo.

“Find Carlo.”

Enzo nodded and moved to the doorway.

“And call Dr. Ellison,” Luca added.

Matteo’s head snapped up. “No.”

Luca looked at him.

“No doctors.”

“Matteo.”

“They’ll say I’m unstable.”

“No one is saying that.”

“They already did.”

His voice rose. Not loud, but cracked.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

She held his gaze for only a moment.

Then Matteo backed away from both of them.

“I’m not signing anything.”

Luca stiffened. “What would you sign?”

Matteo’s eyes filled with fear.

Vanessa closed hers.

Claire understood then that there was another paper. There always was, in houses like this. Cruelty liked documentation.

“Matteo,” Luca said carefully. “What did she ask you to sign?”

The boy reached into his jacket and pulled out another folded sheet.

This one was not cream stationery.

It was legal paper, official, heavy, with lines for signatures at the bottom.

Luca took it.

Claire saw only a few words before his hand tightened.

Temporary Residential Placement.

Behavioral Adjustment.

Boarding Authority.

Vanessa said, “It was for his own good.”

Luca did not look at her.

He read the bottom line.

Parent or Guardian Consent: Luca Moretti.

The signature was already there.

His signature.

Claire looked at Luca’s face and knew he had not signed it.

Matteo whispered, “She said you wanted me gone before the wedding.”

Luca’s voice came rough for the first time.

“No.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

And from somewhere downstairs, through the open library door, came the sound of a car starting in the driveway.

Enzo’s voice crackled through a radio.

“Boss. Carlo just left.”
