Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind His Nights Away

Vincent looked at me. “Daniel’s accident wasn’t random.”

The house seemed to grow quieter around us.

“What do you mean?”

“He was investigating financial irregularities at the company.”

Richard’s expression hardened. “We don’t know that.”

“You know there were irregularities.”

“I know there were discrepancies,” Richard replied. “That is not the same thing.”

Vincent opened his mouth, but I interrupted.

“Please stop speaking as if I’m supposed to understand a conversation that began before I entered the room.”

Richard looked down at the folder on his desk.

For the first time since I had arrived, he seemed less like the head of a powerful family and more like an aging father who had carried a secret too long.

“Daniel discovered that money was being diverted from one of Moretti Holdings’ charitable foundations,” he said.

I said nothing.

“Not a large amount at first. Small transfers, spread across several accounts and several years. He believed the pattern indicated internal fraud. He began investigating quietly.”

“And then he had the accident.”

“Yes,” Richard said.

“Was it an accident?”

“We don’t know.”

Vincent’s voice was low. “Daniel doesn’t remember enough to tell us.”

I looked at him. “And you thought I should be excluded because I might be in danger?”

“I thought the fewer people who knew, the better.”

“Yet you allowed me to believe you were having an affair.”

“I never wanted you to think that.”

“You never came home.”

His eyes lowered.

“You could have told me you were helping Daniel,” I continued. “You could have told me you were dealing with a family crisis. You could have trusted me with the truth.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No. You were trying to control what I was allowed to know.”

The words landed quietly.

Vincent flinched.

Elena sat down beside me. “Claire, I am sorry.”

I turned toward her.

She folded her hands in her lap. “We should have told you. At least enough for you to understand why Vincent was absent.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Daniel asked us to keep everything private. He was afraid that if the person responsible discovered he was recovering, they would try to silence him again.”

The word silence hung in the air.

I thought about the nights Vincent had returned just before dawn. The way he had showered immediately, left his phone facedown, and avoided my questions. The way Sophia had begun taking calls from him in hallways whenever I visited the office.

There had been secrecy.

But not the kind I had imagined.

That did not make it harmless.

“Why did Sophia thank me in the company group chat?” I asked.

Vincent’s face changed.

“What?”

“In the message I sent, I wrote, ‘Thank you, Miss Carter, for taking such excellent care of my husband.’ She didn’t correct me. She didn’t respond.”

“She wasn’t online.”

“She read it.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because she called me immediately afterward.”

“And what did she say?”

He hesitated.

“Vincent.”

“She said you deserved the truth.”

My anger faltered.

“What does that mean?”

He looked toward the window. Outside, the last light had drained from the sky.

“It means Sophia has been trying to convince me to tell you for months.”

I stared at him.

“And you refused.”

“I thought I could resolve everything before it reached you.”

“By staying at the hospital overnight?”

“By protecting Daniel.”

“By making me believe I was being replaced?”

His expression broke.

“I was never replacing you.”

I wanted to believe him.

That was the most painful part.

Three years of marriage had not vanished because one explanation suddenly appeared. The loneliness remained. The unanswered messages remained. The way he had missed my father’s funeral because of a meeting he refused to explain remained.

But beneath the hurt, a different question began forming.

If Vincent had been hiding Daniel’s condition, why had he allowed Sophia to become so visible in his life?

Why had she been the person everyone associated with him?

Why had she been the one taking phone calls, arranging travel, and staying late with him?

I asked.

Vincent answered honestly this time. “Because she knew everything.”

“And I didn’t.”

May you like

“Yes.”

The admission was simple and devastating.
