Chapter 5

Dante lowered the weapon.

That was the moment Raymond finally looked afraid.

Not when Dante aimed at him.

When Dante chose not to become him.

The financial records Emma had preserved eventually reached investigators through attorneys who could keep Lily’s name out of the case.

Raymond lost his money, his businesses, and his freedom.

Celeste’s network fractured soon afterward.

Julian survived.

His left shoulder never moved quite the same again.

None of it made things clean.

Three guards had betrayed Dante.

Two employees had known something was wrong and remained silent because silence was safer.

Emma had nightmares.

Lily began waking whenever elevators chimed.

And Dante had to live with the fact that a frightened mother had been too afraid of him to ask him for help.

Money could repair doors.

It could replace apartments.

It could hire therapists.

It could not erase three months of terror.

Two weeks later, Emma entered Dante’s library carrying an envelope.

“I’m resigning.”

He looked up.

“No.”

Her eyebrow rose.

Dante almost smiled.

“That sounded worse than I intended.”

“It usually does.”

He stood.

“You and Lily can stay here. Different position. No housekeeping. I can arrange—”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“I’m grateful.”

“Then let me protect you.”

“That’s the problem.”

He went silent.

She continued.

“I don’t want Lily growing up believing safety means finding the most powerful man in the room and standing behind him.”

Dante looked away.

“She should learn she can leave the room.”

Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

It hurt more than he expected.

He had imagined rescuing her would create some clean beginning.

Life rarely worked that way.

Sometimes the person you saved still needed distance from you.

Sometimes gratitude was not love.

Sometimes doing one decent thing did not erase a lifetime of darker ones.

Dante arranged a legitimate severance package based on her employment contract, nothing more.

Emma accepted it because it was money she had earned.

She refused the apartment he offered.

Refused the car.

Accepted only one thing.

A phone number Lily could call in an emergency.

Three months later, Dante saw them in Riverside Park.

He had gone early, before most of the city was awake.

Lily spotted him first.

“Mr. Dante!”

She ran toward him in a purple coat.

Emma followed more slowly.

She looked healthier.

Not perfectly.

Just healthier.

There was a difference.

Lily stopped in front of him and immediately flexed both arms.

“Look.”

Dante examined them solemnly.

“Impressive.”

“I do push-ups.”

“How many?”

May you like

“Three.”

“Three is serious.”
