Part 3

“How did you know?”
Molly looked toward Arthur, now seated under guard near the wall.
“I smelled something strange when he finished the sauce.”
“What?”
“Something that didn’t belong in food.”
“That description would fit half the menu.”
Despite herself, Molly almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, she whispered, “I know chemicals.”
Vincent’s eyes sharpened.
“Why?”
Molly hesitated.
Grant reentered carrying a sealed container.
“Boss, plate’s secured.”
Then he noticed Molly’s wrist.
“That needs a hospital.”
“No hospital,” she said quickly.
Vincent turned toward her.
“Why?”
“Because whoever arranged this may be watching emergency rooms.”
Grant and Vincent exchanged a glance.
That answer had revealed too much.
Molly knew it immediately.
Vincent knew it too.
“What exactly are you hiding, Molly Harper?”
She took a slow breath.
“Enough to know I should leave Chicago tonight.”
Vincent looked toward the windows, where cold spring rain streaked the glass.
“No.”
Molly stared at him.
“No?”
“You just prevented an attempt on my life. Whoever planned it will assume you heard something from Arthur. Whether you did or not no longer matters.”
“I can protect myself.”
“I believe you think that.”
Her temper flared.
“I didn’t ask for your opinion.”
One of the guards visibly tensed.
Vincent merely looked at her.
Then, unexpectedly, he said, “Good.”
Molly frowned.
“Good?”
“You’re frightened and still arguing.”
He nodded toward the front door.
“That means you’re thinking.”
He paused.

“Come with me.”
“I’m not getting into a car with a crime boss.”
