Chapter 7 - A House Without Fear

Vincent called the estate.
Nobody answered.
He called again.
Nothing.
Dominic was already moving toward the car.
Clara followed.
Vincent caught her.
"Stay with the police."
"No."
"This isn't Harbor Point."
"Matteo is there."
"Exactly."
"So am I."
"Clara—"
"No."
Her eyes burned.
"You don't get to decide that I care about him only when it's convenient."
Vincent stared.
She lowered her voice.
"I love that kid."
The words hit him.
Clara swallowed.
"And if I'm being completely stupid, I'm starting to love his father too."
Dominic looked away with the expression of a man desperate to be somewhere else.
Vincent stared at Clara.
Then he opened the passenger door.
"Get in."
The drive took twenty-three minutes.
It felt like twenty-three hours.
Vincent monitored the estate cameras from his phone.
Most were offline.
One remained active.
Kitchen.
Empty.
Another flickered.
Main hallway.
Nothing.
Then Matteo's bedroom appeared.
Empty.
Clara whispered, "Come on."
Vincent switched feeds.
Library.
Office.
Terrace.
Then the old nursery.
Matteo sat alone in his wheelchair.
"Found him."
Clara nearly cried.
"Is anyone with him?"
"No."
Matteo looked frightened but unharmed.
Vincent zoomed in.
Something was taped to his chest.
A phone.
Dominic said, "Could be a trap."
"Obviously."
The estate appeared deserted when they arrived.
Too deserted.
Two guards were found unconscious near the service entrance.
Alive.
Drugged.
Dominic checked them.
"Professional."
Vincent entered.
Clara stayed behind him.
"Matteo!"
No response.
They moved toward the nursery.
Then a voice came over the house speakers.
"Vincent."
DeLuca.
Vincent stopped.
Clara went pale.
"Salvatore."
"Good evening."
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere you should've looked years ago."
Vincent scanned the ceiling.
"You won't leave this property."
DeLuca laughed.
"Still making threats."
"Old habit."
"Your wife hated that."
Vincent's face changed.
Clara touched his arm.
Don't react.
DeLuca continued.
"Elena was smarter than you."
"She was."
The answer seemed to surprise him.
"She understood your empire was rotting."
"She did."
"She would've left you eventually."
"Maybe."
Clara looked at Vincent.
He wasn't taking the bait.
"Where's Matteo?"
"Safe for now."
Vincent's phone rang.
Matteo.
He answered.
"Dad?"
"I'm here."
"I'm scared."
Vincent closed his eyes.
"I know."
"Clara?"
"She's here."
Clara took the phone.
"Hey, buddy."
"Clara."
"I'm coming to you."
"No!"
Matteo's voice sharpened.
"There's a man."
"Where?"
"Behind wall."
Vincent and Dominic exchanged looks.
Behind the wall.
Hidden passages.
The estate had several.
DeLuca's voice returned through the speakers.
"You always believed cameras made you safe, Vincent."
A screen in the hallway illuminated.
Security footage appeared.
Old footage.
Elena.
The night before the crash.
She was in Vincent's office.
She looked directly toward one of the hidden cameras.
Then spoke.
"Vincent, if you ever watch this, you need to understand something."
Vincent stopped breathing.
DeLuca had found footage Vincent himself had never seen.
Elena continued.
"You can't protect Matteo by teaching him everyone is dangerous."
Clara covered her mouth.
"You can't love us by controlling us."
Vincent's eyes filled.
"You have to choose."
The recording ended.
DeLuca's voice followed.
"She chose for you."
Vincent whispered, "No."
"What?"
"She gave me another chance."
Silence.
Vincent looked at Dominic.
Then toward a small camera above the hall.
He suddenly understood.
"You're in the security room."
No answer.
Vincent smiled coldly.
"Somewhere I should've looked years ago."
Dominic nodded.
The original security room.
Before the estate renovation, the surveillance system had operated from a hidden basement chamber beneath the west staircase.
Vincent had sealed it years earlier.
Or thought he had.
Dominic and two guards moved toward it.
Vincent and Clara went to Matteo.
They found him alone.
Clara ran.
Matteo threw his arms around her.
Vincent crouched beside them.
"You hurt?"
"No."
"What did he do?"
"Asked where Mom hid the book."
Vincent's jaw tightened.
"What did you say?"
Matteo almost smiled.
"I told him I forgot."
Vincent kissed his forehead.
"Good."
Then Matteo whispered, "I didn't."
"I know."
"Mom said secrets can save people."
Vincent looked at him.
"Sometimes."
"Do cameras?"
Vincent glanced upward.
"Sometimes."
Matteo thought.
"But people save people more."
Clara smiled.
"Your kid is smarter than both of us."
"Clearly."
Dominic's voice came over the radio.
"We have him."
Vincent stood.
Clara caught his hand.
He looked at her.
"Don't become him."
Vincent nodded.
In the old security room, Salvatore DeLuca sat surrounded by dead monitors.
Dominic had disarmed him.
Federal agents were minutes away.
DeLuca smiled when Vincent entered.
"There he is."
Vincent said nothing.
"I've wondered about this moment for fourteen months."
"So have I."
DeLuca laughed.
"You going to pretend you don't want to kill me?"
"No."
The honesty erased DeLuca's smile.
"I want to."
Vincent stepped closer.
"I've imagined it."
Dominic watched carefully.
"But my son is upstairs."
Vincent crouched in front of DeLuca.
"And tomorrow morning he's going to wake up and ask what happened."
DeLuca's expression hardened.
"I'm going to tell him the truth."
Vincent stood.
"That the man who hurt his family was arrested."
"You've gotten soft."
"No."
Vincent looked toward the doorway where Clara stood.
"I finally found something stronger than fear."
Sirens approached.
DeLuca heard them.
His face changed.
"You called federal agents onto your own property?"
"Yes."
"You know what they'll take from you?"
"Probably a lot."
"Your businesses."
"Some."
"Your people."
"Some."
"Your reputation."
Vincent smiled faintly.
"That one can go."
Agents entered.
DeLuca was taken away.
As he passed Vincent, he whispered, "Your father would be ashamed."
Vincent looked at Matteo, who had rolled into the hallway beside Clara.
"Good."
DeLuca was gone.
The case unfolded rapidly after that.
Eric testified.
The truck driver was arrested.
Financial records tied DeLuca's organization to the sabotage that caused the crash.
The ledger exposed years of corruption.
Several officials resigned.
Others were charged.
Vincent cooperated.
It cost him millions.
He surrendered interests in businesses linked to criminal activity.
He closed others voluntarily.
He spent weeks meeting attorneys and prosecutors.
But every evening, he came home.
That mattered.
Three months later, Matteo was in physical therapy when something unexpected happened.
Vincent wasn't watching through glass anymore.
He sat in the room because Matteo had invited him.
Clara stood beside the therapy table.
Matteo gripped the parallel bars.
His therapist supported his hips.
"Ready?"
Matteo nodded.
They weren't trying to make him walk.
Doctors had been clear.
His spinal injury was severe.
Recovery could not be promised.
The goal was strength.
Balance.
Health.
Independence.
Matteo pushed down through his arms.
His body lifted.
Vincent stopped breathing.
For two seconds, Matteo held himself upright with assistance.
Then three.
Then five.
His legs didn't suddenly heal.
There was no miracle.
But Matteo was upright.
He looked at his father.
Vincent's eyes filled.
Matteo grinned.
"Don't make that face."
Vincent laughed through tears.
"What face?"
"The sad-proud face."
Clara laughed.
"It's terrible."
"Both of you are fired."
Matteo lowered himself.
"You can't fire me."
"Good point."
Clara folded her arms.
"What about me?"
Vincent looked at her.
"Definitely can't fire you."
"Why?"
Matteo groaned.
"Oh, no."
Vincent reached into his pocket.
Clara's smile vanished.
"Vincent."
Matteo's eyes widened.
"Wait. Is this happening?"
Vincent lowered himself to one knee.
Clara covered her mouth.
"Vincent Rossi."
"Clara Bennett."
"You are not doing this in a therapy room."
"Apparently I am."
Matteo whispered loudly to the therapist, "I knew it."
Vincent held up a simple diamond ring.
"No giant speech."
"Good."
"No promises that life will always be easy."
"Better."
"No pretending I'm suddenly uncomplicated."
"Very good."
Vincent smiled.
"But I can promise that I won't hide from the hard parts anymore."
Clara's eyes filled.
"I can promise to listen when you tell me I'm being an idiot."
"That's going to happen often."
"I know."
"And?"
Vincent looked at Matteo.
Then back at Clara.
"I can promise that whatever family means from here forward, I want to build it with you."
Clara was crying.
"So..."
Vincent raised an eyebrow.
"Are you going to make me finish the question?"
She laughed.
"Yes."
He smiled.
"Clara Bennett, will you marry me?"
She looked at Matteo.
He nodded furiously.
"Say yes."
Clara laughed through tears.
"Yes."
Matteo cheered.
Vincent slipped the ring onto her finger.
Then Matteo suddenly became serious.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at him.
"If Clara marries Dad..."
Clara wiped her eyes.
"Yes?"
Matteo swallowed.
"Does that mean she can be my mom?"
The room went silent.
Clara knelt beside his wheelchair.
"Only if you want me to be."
Matteo's eyes filled.
He reached for her.
"I already do."
Clara hugged him.
Vincent wrapped his arms around both of them.
For once, no camera was needed to preserve the moment.
But one final problem remained.
Matteo pulled back.
"Dad?"
"Yeah?"
"Can we take down the cameras?"
Vincent looked toward the small black lens in the corner of the therapy room.
Then at Clara.
She waited.
Vincent smiled.
"Most of them."
Matteo frowned.
"Most?"
"I'm still your father."
May you like
Clara laughed.
"Progress, not perfection."
