Chapter 12 - THE GIRL WHO SAVED THE FAMILY

The world seemed to stop spinning.

I looked down at the man kneeling before me. I thought about the terrified maid I had been ten months ago, scrubbing floors to buy arthritis medication. I thought about the fierce, protective man who had carried children out of a burning building and torn down a corrupt empire just to keep me safe.

"Yes," I breathed, the word rushing out on a sob of pure joy. "Yes, Luca. I will."

Luca's face broke into a radiant, breathtaking smile. He slid the vintage emerald ring onto my trembling finger. It fit perfectly.

He stood up and pulled me into his arms, kissing me deeply.

The courtyard erupted. The donors, the politicians, the shelter families—they all rose to their feet in a massive, deafening standing ovation. The string quartet immediately launched into a joyous, sweeping crescendo.

When we finally broke apart, laughing, Leo ran up the stage steps and hugged our legs. Luca picked the little boy up, resting him on his hip, while keeping his other arm wrapped securely around my waist.

We walked back down to our table, surrounded by cheers and congratulations.

The rest of the night was a beautiful blur of dancing, laughter, and celebration.

Later in the evening, as the crowd began to thin out and the fairy lights twinkled above, I found myself standing alone near the edge of the courtyard, taking a moment to breathe.

I looked down at the emerald ring on my finger, then at the silver dove on my wrist.

"It looks beautiful on you."

I turned. My mother was standing a few feet away, holding a cup of tea.

"Mom," I smiled, walking over to her.

"Eleanor always said green was the family color," she murmured, tracing the emerald. "I never thought I'd see that ring again."

"I wish I could have met her," I said quietly.

My mother looked at me, a deep sense of peace settling over her features.

"You didn't need to meet her, Natalie. You have her spirit. You did exactly what she was trying to do twenty years ago. You finished her fight."

Luca walked over, handing me a glass of champagne. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pressing a kiss to my temple.

"Ready to go home, Mrs. Moretti?" Luca teased softly.

I leaned against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. I looked out over the courtyard, at the new shelter standing tall and safe in the night.

"I'm already home," I said.
