Chapter 8 - The Man at the School Gate

Peace lasted 7 months.

Then Eli disappeared.

Hazel arrived at his elementary school at 3:12 p.m.

His teacher came outside alone.

“Eli left early.”

Hazel froze.

“With whom?”

“His uncle.”

“I don’t have a brother.”

The teacher went pale.

Gabriel received Hazel’s call while standing inside the legitimate Rossi Shipping headquarters.

By the time she finished speaking, he was already moving.

Old instincts screamed inside him.

Find.

Hunt.

Destroy.

But he forced himself to think.

Security footage showed Eli leaving with a man wearing a baseball cap.

Tommy identified him within an hour.

Dominic Vale.

The captain who had joined Victor.

Dominic had disappeared before the federal sweep.

Now he wanted revenge.

A message arrived.

Your father took my family from me. You took my empire. Now I take yours.

Hazel read it.

Her knees weakened.

Gabriel caught her.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“We’re getting him back.”

“What if—”

“No.”

Gabriel’s voice softened.

“Don’t go where fear wants you to go.”

Hazel pressed her forehead against his chest.

The FBI became involved immediately.

Dominic called at 8:00.

“Gabriel.”

“Where is he?”

The man laughed.

“You sound almost human now.”

“If you hurt him—”

“What? You’ll become the old Gabriel?”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

That was exactly what Dominic wanted.

“I’m listening.”

“I want $10 million and a plane.”

“You can have it.”

Hazel looked at him.

Dominic paused.

“That easy?”

“He’s a child.”

“You really love the kid.”

“Yes.”

“And his mother?”

Gabriel looked directly at Hazel.

“More than anything.”

Hazel’s eyes filled.

Dominic laughed.

“Then this will hurt.”

The call ended.

But federal technicians had traced part of it.

An abandoned amusement park outside Buffalo.

Gabriel wanted to join the tactical team.

The agent in charge refused.

Hazel surprised everyone.

“Listen to him.”

Gabriel stared.

“He has Eli.”

“And Eli needs you alive afterward.”

Those words stopped him.

The raid began at 2:11 a.m.

Gabriel waited inside a command vehicle.

Each second was torture.

Then the radio crackled.

“Child located.”

Gabriel stopped breathing.

“Child secure.”

Hazel sobbed.

Gabriel pulled her against him.

Then another transmission came.

“Suspect fleeing east.”

Gabriel looked through the windshield.

A figure burst through a broken gate.

Dominic.

He ran directly toward their vehicle.

Gabriel stepped outside before anyone could stop him.

Dominic raised a handgun.

Gabriel stared down the barrel.

Years earlier, he would have drawn first.

Instead he remained still.

“You ruined everything!” Dominic screamed.

“No.”

Gabriel looked at him calmly.

“We ruined ourselves.”

Dominic’s hand trembled.

“Shut up!”

“You can still put it down.”

“You think you’re better than me?”

“No.”

That answer confused him.

Gabriel continued.

“I just stopped pretending violence fixed what violence broke.”

Dominic’s expression twisted.

For one terrible second, Gabriel believed he would fire.

Then tactical officers surrounded him.

Dominic dropped the weapon.

Minutes later, Eli emerged wrapped in a blanket.

Hazel ran.

The boy collided with her.

Gabriel stayed several feet away.

Then Eli looked over Hazel’s shoulder.

“Gabriel?”

Gabriel approached.

Eli reached for him.

Gabriel knelt.

“I knew you’d find me.”

Gabriel’s eyes burned.

“We all did.”

Eli hugged him.

And Gabriel realized something.

Once, men had feared Gabriel Rossi because he could destroy families.

Now one small family trusted him because he had learned how to protect one without becoming a monster.

That mattered more.

But the greatest surprise came 3 weeks later.

Hazel found Gabriel repairing a loose porch board.

“You’re terrible at that.”

“I ran shipping ports.”

“You are currently losing a fight with a nail.”

Gabriel glared at the hammer.

Hazel sat beside him.

“I have something for you.”

She handed him an envelope.

Gabriel opened it.

Inside was a legal document.

He read the heading.

Petition for adoption.

Gabriel looked up sharply.

Hazel smiled through tears.

“Eli asked.”

Gabriel could not speak.

“He wants your last name someday,” she continued. “Only if you want—”

Gabriel pulled her into his arms.

Hazel laughed.

“Is that a yes?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t read the paperwork.”

“I don’t care.”

“You should. Your lawyer would be horrified.”

“My lawyer is always horrified.”

Then Eli appeared at the screen door.

“So?”

Gabriel looked at him.

“So what?”

“Are you gonna be my dad?”

Gabriel’s throat closed.

He opened his arms.

Eli ran into them.

May you like

And once again, Gabriel Rossi cried.

This time nobody looked away.
