Chapter 4 - A DEBT SHE REFUSED TO OWEFor three weeks, Norah polished silver.

It was dull work.
Which was perfect.
Her wrist healed.
Her nightmares didn’t.
She kept seeing Ray’s ring.
Kept wondering how close violence had come to becoming something worse.
Gabriel mostly disappeared behind closed doors.
Still, traces of him were everywhere.
A half-finished drink in the library.
Cedar cologne in the foyer.
A leather ledger left on a desk.
One afternoon he appeared in the silver room doorway.
“You’re pressing too hard.”
Norah jumped.
“You’ll damage the plating.”
“I know how to polish silver.”
“Evidence suggests otherwise.”
She glared.
Gabriel stepped inside.
“How is the wrist?”
“Itches.”
The answer escaped automatically.
His mouth shifted.
“Good. It means nerves are awake.”
Norah studied him.
“Why do you know that?”
“I’ve broken enough bones.”
“Yours or other people’s?”
“Yes.”
She almost laughed.
Then he placed Ray’s velvet box on the table.
Norah’s smile disappeared.
“I don’t want that.”
“Then dispose of it.”
“I don’t want to know what happened because of me.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“Nothing happened because of you.”
“You bought his debt.”
“Yes.”
“You sent men.”
“Yes.”
“You changed my lease.”
“Yes.”
“And now everyone treats me differently.”
That made him pause.
Norah continued.
“People move out of my way.”
“They should respect boundaries.”
“They’re afraid I belong to you.”
Something changed behind his eyes.
“Do you?”
Norah stared at him.
“No.”
Gabriel said nothing.
“I work here.”
“Yes.”
“You employ me.”
“Yes.”
“That’s all.”
A long silence.
Then he nodded once.
“That’s all.”
She hadn’t expected agreement.
Gabriel turned toward the door.
Norah stopped him.
“Why did you do it?”
He looked back.
“The rent?”
“All of it.”
His answer came quietly.
“Because fear makes people accept things they would otherwise refuse.”
Norah thought of Ray.
“And you thought removing the fear would fix me?”
“No.”
He met her eyes.
“I thought it might give you enough room to fix yourself.”
Then he left.
Norah sat alone for several minutes.
That night, she took Ray’s ring to the river.
Stood on a bridge.
And threw it into black water.
The next morning she began saving money.
Not to repay Gabriel.
To prove something to herself.
That safety did not need to become dependency.

And that if she ever stayed inside the Rossi estate after she had enough money to leave—
it would be because she had chosen to.
