Chapter 5

Nicholas stared at her. For a moment, the crime boss and the surgeon seemed to be the only people in the room. He saw the absolute, uncompromising determination in her expression.

He reached into his waistband, removed the Beretta, and placed it heavily on the metal surgical tray. Then he stripped off his shirt, revealing a torso covered in scars and ink, and pulled himself onto the adjacent operating table.

“Line him up,” Helena ordered Dr. Lynn.

Within minutes, 2 thick intravenous lines connected Nicholas’s muscular arm directly to the central line in his mother’s neck. Helena watched as Nicholas’s dark, rich blood flowed into the frail, dying woman beside him.

“All right,” Helena said, largely to herself. “I have 20 minutes before his blood pressure becomes too low. Gore-Tex graft. 4-0 Prolene suture. Let’s rebuild a heart.”

For the next 15 minutes, Helena worked with extraordinary speed and precision. She removed the shredded, poisoned section of Caterina’s aorta and began sewing a synthetic tube into place.

Throughout the procedure, she continued looking toward Nicholas. His skin grew paler by the second. Sweat gathered on his forehead. His blood was carrying life directly into his mother, and his eyes remained fixed on Helena’s hands.

“His blood pressure is dropping,” Dr. Lynn warned. “The donor is at 80 over 50. He is going to lose consciousness.”

“Keep the lines open,” Nicholas slurred, fighting the darkness narrowing his vision. “Don’t stop.”

“I’m almost done. Tying off the distal anastomosis.”

Helena’s hands moved rapidly as she secured the final surgical knot.

“Clamps coming off.”

She released the cross-clamp.

Everyone in the room waited. If the stitches failed, the pressurized blood would tear the graft apart and kill Caterina instantly.

The graft held.
