Chapter 8 - THE MASTER MANIPULATOR'S FINAL EXPOSED LIE

The damp air in the tunnel felt suddenly freezing.

I stared at the photograph, my mind struggling to process the horror.

My mother's accident eleven months ago hadn't been random.

A car had jumped the curb, crushing her leg, forcing her to quit her nursing job, drowning us in medical debt.

That debt was the only reason I had applied for the high-paying maid position at the Moretti estate.

Vanessa hadn't just blackmailed my mother.

She had orchestrated the accident to force me into this house.

Why?

"Miss Rachel?" Sophie whispered, touching my cheek. "You're crying."

I wiped the tears away roughly, shoving the photograph into my pocket.

"I'm okay, sweetheart. Let's keep moving."

We hurried down the tunnel. The air grew colder, smelling of motor oil and old wood.

We reached the wooden stairs leading up into the carriage house garage.

I pushed the trapdoor open carefully.

The garage was quiet. Several of Luca's vintage cars sat in the shadows.

We climbed out.

Through the garage windows, I could see the main house.

Police sirens were screaming in the distance. Blue and red lights began to flash against the rain-slicked driveway.

Luca's loyal men had finally overwhelmed the Bellini thugs.

The estate was swarming with Chicago police and Luca's private security.

We were safe.

I carried Sophie out the side door, walking toward the flashing lights.

As we approached the front courtyard, a massive cheer went up from the loyal guards.

Luca was walking out of the front doors of the mansion.

He was carrying Caroline in his arms.

She was bruised, but she was alive.

Marco had been subdued. Two police officers were dragging the traitorous security chief toward a cruiser in handcuffs.

"Daddy! Mommy!"

Sophie wiggled out of my arms and ran across the wet pavement.

Luca dropped to his knees, catching his daughter as Caroline wrapped her arms around both of them.

It was a desperate, messy, beautiful embrace.

The family was whole.

I stood back, watching them, feeling a profound sense of relief, but also a burning, unresolved anger.

A pair of officers marched Vanessa out of the house.

She was in handcuffs, her red silk gown ruined, her perfect makeup smeared with tears and rain.

As they walked her past me, she stopped.

She looked at me, a bitter, vicious sneer on her face.

"You think you won, Rachel?" she hissed. "I still own your mother's building. I'll have her on the street by morning."

I didn't shrink back.

I walked right up to her, ignoring the police officers.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the photograph I'd found in her coat.

I held it up to her face.

"You didn't just buy her building," I said quietly, my voice vibrating with rage. "You ordered Marco to run her over eleven months ago."

Vanessa's sneer faltered.

Luca, hearing my voice, stood up and walked over.

He looked at the photograph.

His jaw clenched so tight I thought his teeth would shatter.

"Why, Vanessa?" Luca demanded, his voice dangerously low. "Why target a maid's mother?"

Vanessa looked at Luca, realizing her final secret was completely exposed.

She laughed, a hollow, broken sound.

"Because I needed a scapegoat, Luca! When the Bellini family finally assassinated you, we needed someone on the inside to take the fall! A desperate, indebted maid whose mother worked with your ex-wife? It was the perfect frame job!"

Luca stared at the woman he had almost married.

He didn't yell. He didn't strike her.

He just looked at the police officers.

"Get this garbage off my property," Luca ordered. "And tell the District Attorney she just confessed to attempted murder and conspiracy."

The officers shoved Vanessa forward, pushing her into the back of a squad car.

The heavy door slammed shut, trapping her inside.

The master manipulator was finally finished.

I stood in the rain, my whole body shaking as the adrenaline left me.

Luca turned to me.

He reached out and gently placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Rachel," he said softly. "I am so incredibly sorry."

I nodded, unable to speak through my tears.

Caroline walked over, holding Sophie's hand.

She looked at me, her eyes filled with immense gratitude.

"You saved my daughter," Caroline whispered. "You saved our family."

Sophie tugged on her mother's hand.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, baby?"

May you like

The little girl looked up, her blue eyes wide and hopeful.

"Are you going to leave me again?"
