The Betrayal Behind the Golden Dress

Richard Mercer smiled as Bianca unfolded the birth certificate.

Her hands trembled so badly that the paper rattled.

Beside her, Matteo Bellandi stood perfectly still.

Bianca found the line marked FATHER.

And read the name.

Richard Alexander Mercer.

For several seconds, the mansion seemed to disappear around her.

The shattered front gate.

The armed security guards.

Livia crying near the dining room.

The man standing before her with his silver-handled cane.

None of it made sense.

"No," Bianca whispered.

Mercer's smile widened.

"Hello, daughter."

Bianca stared at him.

Then she looked at Matteo.

He appeared as shocked as she felt.

"That's impossible," she said.

Mercer shrugged.

"Your mother was young. Your grandfather was stubborn. And Vittorio was willing to accept an arrangement that benefited everyone."

Bianca felt sick.

"An arrangement?"

"A marriage. A respectable family name. A child who would never need to know the circumstances of her birth."

She looked toward the hallway.

"Where's my mother?"

Mercer tilted his head.

"Somewhere she should have stayed."

Matteo stepped forward.

"Enough."

Mercer laughed softly.

"Still protecting her? Even now?"

"You're trespassing."

"And you're standing between a father and his daughter."

Bianca suddenly found her voice.

"Don't call yourself that."

Mercer's smile faded.

She held up the certificate.

"A name on a piece of paper doesn't make you my father."

His eyes hardened.

"No. But it makes you useful."

The honesty of the answer chilled her more than any threat.

Matteo moved beside Bianca.

"Enzo."

The security chief appeared at the far end of the corridor.

"Boss."

"Secure the exits. Nobody leaves with Bianca or the documents."

Mercer raised an eyebrow.

"You seem confused about who's in control."

Matteo looked at him.

"Not at all."

Mercer tapped his cane against the marble floor.

"Four vehicles outside. A court petition already filed. Financial agreements waiting to be executed."

He smiled.

"You can't protect her forever."

Bianca looked at the certificate again.

Something bothered her.

The paper looked old.

But the ink around Mercer's name appeared darker than the rest.

She turned toward Gabriel Voss, who had entered behind Enzo.

"Can this be verified?"

Gabriel examined the document without touching it.

"Yes. Through the issuing authority and the original registration records."

Mercer's expression tightened.

"There's no need for that."

Bianca looked up.

"Then you won't mind."

For the first time, Mercer stopped smiling.

A familiar voice came from the staircase.

"Richard."

Everyone turned.

Serena Rossetti stood beneath the chandelier.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were clasped so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

Mercer looked almost pleased.

"Serena. Perfect timing."

Bianca stared at her mother.

"Is it true?"

Serena didn't answer.

"Look at me, Mama."

Slowly, Serena raised her eyes.

Bianca held up the certificate.

"Is Richard Mercer my father?"

Serena's lips trembled.

"Bianca, please understand—"

"Yes or no?"

A tear slipped down Serena's cheek.

"Yes."

The word landed like a physical blow.

Bianca stepped backward.

Matteo reached toward her but stopped before touching her.

He waited.

She appreciated that more than she could explain.

Serena descended the last few stairs.

"I was twenty-one. Richard was older. Powerful. He promised me a future."

Mercer sighed.

"Let's not turn this into a confession."

Serena ignored him.

"When I became pregnant, he told me he couldn't acknowledge you. His family had plans. His business partners wouldn't accept a scandal."

Bianca's throat tightened.

"So you married Vittorio?"

"Yes."

"Did he know?"

Serena nodded.

"From the beginning."

Bianca looked toward her father, standing near the dining room entrance.

Vittorio wouldn't meet her eyes.

"And Grandpa?"

"He knew too."

Bianca felt tears rise.

"Everyone knew."

Serena reached for her.

"Sweetheart—"

Bianca stepped away.

"Everyone except me."

Livia suddenly laughed.

It was a small, broken sound.

Bianca turned.

Her sister stood against the wall, still wearing the torn gold dress.

"Of course," Livia whispered.

Serena looked sharply at her.

"Livia, not now."

But Livia shook her head.

"No. I finally understand."

She looked at Bianca.

"That's why they never let you leave."

Bianca frowned.

"What?"

Livia's face crumpled.

"I thought they kept you in the kitchen because they were ashamed of you."

Mercer's expression changed.

"Livia."

She ignored him.

"But it wasn't just that."

She looked at her mother.

"They needed her close enough to control."

Serena shook her head.

"Stop."

Livia stepped forward.

"The recipes. The royalties. The fake ownership papers. Dad kept saying we couldn't let Bianca become independent."

Bianca felt her stomach tighten.

"Why?"

Livia looked at Mercer.

"Because if she discovered who she was, she'd discover what she owned."

Mercer struck his cane against the floor.

"Be quiet."

Livia flinched.

Then raised her chin.

"No."

The room fell silent.

Bianca stared at her sister.

It was the first time she had ever heard Livia openly defy someone powerful.

And it was long overdue.

Gabriel opened his briefcase.

"Mr. Mercer, I think it's time we discuss the original beneficiary clause."

Mercer looked toward him.

"That document is confidential."

"Not to the beneficiary."

Gabriel turned toward Bianca.

"Your grandfather's trust contained a second beneficiary whose identity was sealed."

Bianca nodded slowly.

"We knew that."

Gabriel held up a document.

"The clause refers to an individual with a legal interest in certain assets connected to the Mercer Street redevelopment."

Matteo's eyes narrowed.

"Bianca."

Gabriel nodded.

"Possibly."

Mercer laughed.

"You're reaching."

"Then you won't object to a full audit."

Mercer's smile disappeared.

Gabriel continued.

"The original redevelopment agreement transferred several intellectual-property and commercial rights into a protective trust. Those rights were intended to prevent Vesper Holdings from acquiring the bakery through coercion."

Bianca looked confused.

"What does that have to do with my father?"

Gabriel glanced at Mercer.

"Because the agreement also referenced a future child beneficiary."

Mercer went still.

Bianca stared at him.

"Me?"

Gabriel nodded.

"If the original documents are genuine, your legal relationship to Mercer may give you standing to challenge transactions his companies executed using your grandfather's property."

Matteo studied Mercer.

"That's why you want control of her."

Mercer said nothing.

"You don't want a daughter," Matteo continued. "You want someone who can sign away claims against your companies."

Bianca felt cold.

The forged guardianship petition.

The wedding ring.

The sudden pressure to marry.

All of it.

Not romance.

Not family.

A signature.

Her signature.

Mercer looked directly at Bianca.

"You're being manipulated."

She almost laughed.

"By whom?"

"Bellandi."

Matteo's expression remained unreadable.

Mercer continued.

"His family helped build the very system you're trying to expose."

"I know."

"Then why are you standing beside him?"

Bianca glanced at Matteo.

Because he had listened when she spoke.

Because he had helped Rosa's brother.

Because he had told her she could say no.

Because he had admitted things that made him look terrible rather than hiding behind excuses.

But she didn't say any of that.

Instead, she looked at Mercer.

"Because he's not asking me to sign anything."

Mercer's face darkened.

Bianca continued.

"You are."

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Matteo spoke.

"Enzo, notify the investigators that Mercer is here. Provide the recorded threats and the financial documents."

Mercer laughed.

"You think the police will believe a mafia boss?"

Matteo's voice remained calm.

"They don't have to believe me. They can examine the evidence."

Mercer's phone vibrated.

He checked it.

For the first time, his composure cracked.

"What have you done?" he demanded.

Matteo looked at him.

"Nothing you weren't expecting."

Mercer stared at the screen.

Then turned toward Bianca.

"You have no idea what you've started."

Bianca met his eyes.

"Then tell me."

He stepped closer.

"Your grandfather didn't build that trust to protect you."

She stiffened.

"He built it because he was afraid of what you might inherit."

Matteo moved forward.

"Enough."

Mercer looked at him.

"Ask Alessandro about the three-million-dollar payment."

Bianca felt her pulse quicken.

"We already know about it."

"Do you?"

Mercer smiled again.

"Then ask him why the money was transferred on the morning of the fire."

Bianca stared.

"Grandpa said it was unauthorized."

"Of course he did."

Mercer leaned closer.

"Your grandfather was an excellent baker. He was also a very clever businessman."

Bianca shook her head.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

Mercer reached into his coat.

Enzo immediately stepped forward.

"Hands where I can see them."

Mercer slowly removed a folded photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Bianca looked down.

The photograph showed Alessandro Rossetti standing beside Richard Mercer.

Both men were smiling.

Between them stood a little girl.

Bianca.

She looked about six years old.

The three of them stood outside the original Mercer Street bakery.

On the back was a handwritten date.

One year before the fire.

Bianca stared.

"I don't remember this."

Mercer nodded.

"That's because your family made sure you wouldn't."

A voice came from the hallway.

"That's enough, Richard."

Alessandro Rossetti entered slowly, leaning on his cane.

Elena followed in her wheelchair, accompanied by Enzo's security team.

Bianca turned toward her grandfather.

"Is it true?"

Alessandro looked at the photograph.

His face filled with pain.

"Some of it."

Mercer smiled.

"Finally."

Alessandro ignored him.

He approached Bianca.

"I should have told you years ago."

Bianca stepped backward.

"Did you know Richard Mercer was my father?"

"Yes."

"Did you let him near me?"

Alessandro lowered his eyes.

"Once."

Bianca felt sick.

"Why?"

"Because I believed he might do the right thing."

Mercer laughed.

"And when I didn't?"

Alessandro looked at him.

"You threatened a child."

The room went silent.

Elena's voice was weak but clear.

"Richard promised to acknowledge Bianca if Alessandro signed over the bakery property."

Bianca stared.

"My own father tried to trade his name for Grandpa's bakery?"

Elena nodded.

"And when Alessandro refused, Richard began using Vittorio's debts against us."

Bianca closed her eyes.

Every revelation seemed to lead to another betrayal.

Alessandro reached for her hand.

She didn't take it.

He accepted that.

"I wanted you to grow up without knowing how cruel the people around you could be."

Bianca looked at him.

"But I grew up with them anyway."

The words broke him.

Livia stepped forward.

"Bianca."

Her sister turned.

Livia's hands were shaking.

"There's something I need to tell you."

Serena immediately stiffened.

"No."

Livia ignored her.

"The gold dress."

Bianca frowned.

"What about it?"

"It wasn't mine."

Bianca stared.

"What?"

Livia looked toward Mercer.

"He bought it."

Mercer's expression darkened.

"That is irrelevant."

"No, it isn't."

Livia swallowed.

"He sent it to me three days before the dinner. With jewelry. Shoes. Everything."

Bianca remembered her sister standing beneath the chandelier, glittering like a movie star.

She remembered Serena pulling her away from the kitchen doorway.

She remembered Livia claiming Bianca's bread as her own.

"Why?" Bianca asked.

Livia began crying.

"Because he told me Matteo Bellandi had to fall in love with me."

Matteo's eyes narrowed.

Mercer said nothing.

Livia continued.

"He said if Matteo married me, the Bellandi investment would go through. Dad's debts would disappear. And Bianca would never need to know about the trust."

Bianca stared.

"You knew about the trust?"

Livia nodded miserably.

"Not everything. But enough."

Her voice broke.

"I thought I was saving us."

Bianca felt tears rise.

"You were selling me."

Livia covered her mouth.

"I know."

For the first time, she didn't offer an excuse.

She simply stood there and cried.

Matteo looked at Mercer.

"You tried to arrange a marriage between Livia and me."

Mercer smiled faintly.

"It would have been mutually beneficial."

"And when I became interested in Bianca?"

"That complicated matters."

Matteo stepped closer.

"Then you tried to make her afraid of me."

Mercer shrugged.

"You're not exactly an innocent man."

"No," Matteo agreed.

His voice hardened.

"But I don't use women as collateral."

Mercer looked at Bianca.

"Your sister understood the importance of family."

Bianca shook her head.

"No. She understood what you were paying her to pretend."

Livia began sobbing harder.

Mercer's expression turned cold.

"Careful, Bianca."

She met his gaze.

"Or what?"

"You don't know what happens to people who cross me."

Matteo stepped beside her.

"Then explain it to me."

Mercer stared at him.

The room seemed to shrink around the two men.

For years, Richard Mercer had controlled people through fear.

Money.

Threats.

Secrets.

Now he faced someone who knew his methods.

And refused to move.

Gabriel's phone rang.

He answered quietly.

Then his expression changed.

"Yes. I understand."

He ended the call.

"Bianca."

She turned.

"What?"

"The court has temporarily stayed the guardianship petition pending review of the disputed medical evidence."

Bianca exhaled.

For the first time that evening, she felt something resembling relief.

Gabriel continued.

"And the trust administrator has confirmed that your beneficiary rights cannot be transferred without your independent authorization."

Mercer's face darkened.

Matteo looked at him.

"Your plan is falling apart."

Mercer smiled.

"Plans change."

Then his phone vibrated again.

He checked it.

A strange expression crossed his face.

Almost satisfaction.

Bianca noticed.

"What?"

Mercer looked up.

"Nothing."

But she didn't believe him.

Not anymore.

Enzo approached Matteo.

"Boss. Investigators are on their way. We have enough evidence to detain Mercer until they arrive, but there's another problem."

Matteo frowned.

"What?"

"The original ledger."

Bianca looked toward Gabriel's briefcase.

"What about it?"

Enzo swallowed.

"Someone accessed the secure evidence room."

Gabriel went pale.

"That's impossible."

Enzo shook his head.

"The security camera feed was replaced with a recording."

Matteo's expression hardened.

"Is the ledger missing?"

"Yes."

Bianca felt cold.

The document that could expose the entire conspiracy.

Gone.

Mercer laughed softly.

Everyone turned toward him.

"What?" Bianca demanded.

He raised his hands.

"Don't look at me."

Matteo stepped forward.

"Who took it?"

Mercer smiled.

"You should ask the person who knew where it was."

Bianca looked around.

Gabriel.

Enzo.

Matteo.

Her grandparents.

Livia.

Serena.

Someone in the house had betrayed them again.

Then a small voice came from the doorway.

"Bianca?"

Rosa Alvarez stood there.

Her face was white.

In her hands was a sealed envelope.

Bianca turned.

"Rosa?"

The young woman began crying.

"I'm sorry."

Bianca's heart sank.

"What happened?"

Rosa held out the envelope.

"Someone told me to give you this."

Matteo immediately stepped closer.

"Who?"

Rosa shook her head.

"I didn't see their face."

Bianca took the envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

In the same handwriting as the forged trust documents.

She opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A recent photograph.

Taken inside the mansion.

It showed someone standing beside the secure evidence cabinet.

Holding the original ledger.

Bianca stared.

The person's face was turned away.

But the clothing was unmistakable.

A glittering gold dress.

Livia.

Bianca slowly raised her eyes.

Her sister stood frozen beside the staircase.

"Livia?"

Livia shook her head.

"No."

Bianca held up the photograph.

"Then explain this."

Livia's face drained of color.

"I didn't take it."

Mercer smiled.

"Are you sure?"

Livia looked at him.

And suddenly, Bianca understood.

Her sister wasn't surprised by the photograph.

She was terrified of what it meant.

"Livia," Bianca whispered, "what did you do?"

Livia began shaking.

"I thought I was helping."

Bianca stepped closer.

"Helping whom?"

Her sister looked toward Serena.

Then toward Mercer.

Finally, she whispered, "The man who promised to make everything right."

Matteo's expression changed.

"Who?"

Livia opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every light in the mansion went out.

A sharp electronic alarm sounded.

Enzo grabbed his radio.

"Security, report!"

Static.

Then a voice.

"Boss, the east service entrance is open."

Matteo moved in front of Bianca.

"Lock down the house."

The voice crackled again.

"We can't."

"Why not?"

A pause.

Then the guard whispered, "Because the person who opened it has your security clearance."

Matteo went still.

Bianca felt her heart hammer.

In the darkness, a phone began ringing.

Not Matteo's.

Not Gabriel's.

Livia's.

Its screen illuminated her terrified face.

She stared at the caller ID.

Then slowly turned the phone toward Bianca.

One name glowed on the screen.

ENZO MARCHETTI.

Behind them, a door clicked open.

May you like

And from the dark hallway came Enzo's voice.

"Matteo, don't trust the man standing beside you."
