Chapter 8

At sunrise, Adrian drove Emily home himself.

Marcus followed in another car with Victor restrained in the back.

The recording, the surveillance material and the financial records Adrian’s people had gathered would be turned over through attorneys to investigators. Victor had betrayed too many people and left too much evidence to disappear quietly.

But Adrian barely thought about him.

Emily sat in the passenger seat wearing Adrian’s coat.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Emily said, “He asked me every day where the recording was.”

Adrian tightened his grip on the wheel.

“I never told him.”

“I know.”

“I kept thinking about Lily hugging that rabbit. If Victor realized…”

Her voice broke.

“He would have gone back for it.”

“And for her.”

“Yes.”

Emily turned toward the window.

“I thought I might never see her again.”

Adrian glanced at her.

“You protected her.”

“I left her.”

“You were taken.”

“She was sick. I told her I’d be right back.”

“You were taken.”

Emily’s eyes filled again.

Adrian slowed the car.

“You did not leave your daughter.”

Emily stared ahead.

“I need her to know that.”

“She knows.”

“How?”

“Because I told her.”

Emily looked at him.

“And she believed you?”

Adrian thought about thirteen days on a marble step.

“No. Not at first.”

Despite everything, Emily gave a broken little laugh.

The gates of the Mercer estate appeared beyond the trees.

Adrian drove through.

On the third step of the mansion’s front staircase sat Lily.

Rose stood several feet behind her.

Lily held Mr. Buttons against her chest.

The car stopped.

Emily opened the door.

Lily looked up.

Nothing happened for one heartbeat.

Then the rabbit fell.

“MOMMY!”

Lily ran.

Emily barely made it three steps before dropping to her knees.

Her daughter crashed into her arms.

Emily wrapped herself around the child so tightly it seemed she was trying to place Lily back inside her own heart where nobody could ever reach her again.

“I came back,” Emily sobbed.

“You were gone.”

“I know.”

“I waited.”

“I know, baby.”

“You were gone so long.”

“I know.”

Lily pulled back and touched her mother’s face with both hands.

“Uncle Adrian said you didn’t leave me.”

Emily looked over Lily’s shoulder.

Adrian stood beside the car with a bandage beneath his torn shirt.

Their eyes met.

“He was right,” Emily whispered. “I would never leave you.”

Lily buried herself against her again.

Adrian turned away.

He had seen men surrender businesses to him.

He had watched rivals collapse.

He had watched fortunes move with one signature.

None of those victories had ever felt like this.

A promise kept to a three-year-old girl.

That morning changed more than Adrian expected.

Victor’s betrayal network was dismantled.

Several of Adrian’s senior men disappeared from his organization before noon—not into graves, but out of positions where they could ever threaten another family. Lawyers spent the next months separating Adrian’s legitimate shipping, warehouse and property companies from the criminal operations his father had built.

For the first time in his life, Adrian began closing doors instead of conquering new territory.

Marcus confronted him about it one evening.

“You’re really ending half the business.”

“Yes.”

“Your father would hate it.”

“My father is dead.”

Marcus almost smiled.

“That he is.”

Adrian looked through the study window.

Outside, Lily was chasing bubbles across the lawn while Emily sat beneath a maple tree watching her.

“I spent eleven years protecting an empire that nearly killed an innocent woman inside my own home.”

“You didn’t order it.”

“I built the house where men like Victor believed they could do it.”

Marcus was silent.

Adrian continued.

“I’m not giving Lily that inheritance.”

“So what do you give her?”

Adrian watched the little girl fall into the grass laughing.

“A house she doesn’t have to be afraid of.”

Emily recovered slowly.

Not only physically.

For weeks, she woke at small sounds.

She disliked closed doors.

May you like

She checked Lily’s bed three times every night.

Adrian never told her to stop.
