Chapter 1

THE MAFIA BOSS FOUND HIS MAID HIDING A BROKEN ARM… BY SUNRISE, FIFTEEN POWERFUL MEN HAD VANISHED

A senator's spoiled son broke my arm at a billionaire's party, then threatened to stop my dying mother's cancer treatment if I told anyone. I thought my life was over when my ruthless mafia boss found me crying in a storage closet, but instead of firing me, he made one terrifying phone call. By sunrise, fifteen powerful men had disappeared, my mother's $71,000 hospital debt was erased, and the most dangerous man in New York was standing outside my bedroom with a warning that made my blood run cold.

“PLEASE, SIR! DON'T FIRE ME! MY MOTHER WILL DIE WITHOUT THIS JOB!”

I fell to my knees, clutching my injured arm.

Damon Blackwell stood in the doorway, his enormous shadow covering the floor.

At thirty-four, he was six-foot-five, broad-shouldered, with powerful muscles and dark tattoos covering both arms and climbing his neck.

His cold gray eyes had frightened politicians, billionaires, and rival mafia families.

But tonight, those eyes were fixed on me.

“Kate,” he said quietly. “Show me your arm.”

“It's nothing, Mr. Blackwell.”

Blood had soaked through my maid's uniform.

He stepped closer.

“Who touched you?”

My name is Kate Bennett. I'm twenty-six, and I've worked as a maid at the Blackwell estate for almost two years.

My mother was battling cancer.

Her hospital bills had reached $71,000.

I needed every dollar I earned.

That evening, nearly three hundred wealthy guests attended Damon's private celebration.

I was carrying champagne into the library when Preston Caldwell, the senator's arrogant son, blocked my path.

Three of his friends laughed behind him.

“Pretty little maid,” Preston sneered. “Come entertain us.”

“Please, sir. I'm working.”

When I tried to leave, he grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away.

He twisted harder.

CRACK!

Pain exploded through my arm.

I screamed.

Preston leaned close.

“Tell anyone, sweetheart, and your mother loses everything.”

I escaped upstairs and hid among cleaning supplies, trembling and crying.

That's where Damon found me.

When I finally showed him my swollen arm, his expression changed.

He crouched before me, carefully avoiding the injury.

“Your mother is at Saint Vincent's Hospital,” he said. “Seventy-one thousand dollars outstanding.”

I stared at him.

“How do you know that?”

“I know the people who work under my roof.”

He pulled out his phone.

“Matteo. Pay Kate Bennett's mother's entire hospital balance. Immediately.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Sir, I can't repay you.”

“I'm not asking you to.”

Then his voice turned dangerously cold.

“Give me his name.”

“Preston Caldwell.”

Damon went completely still.

“Was he alone?”

I shook my head.

“There were others.”

He made another call.

“Matteo. Review every security recording. Identify everyone involved.”

A pause.

“Fifteen names? Good. I want them found before sunrise.”

Within minutes, a private doctor arrived to treat my broken arm.

Damon stood beside the window, speaking quietly into his phone.

“Make sure Kate never has to face those men again.”

By morning, Preston Caldwell and fourteen other men had vanished.

Nobody knew where they'd gone.

My mother's hospital debt had disappeared, too.

That afternoon, Damon visited my room.

He carried a sealed envelope.

Inside was a photograph of me leaving the hospital with my mother.

Someone had written five words across the back.

“THE SENATOR KNOWS. SHE'S NEXT.”

My hands began trembling.

Damon took the photograph.

For the first time, I saw fear in the eyes of the man everyone called heartless.

Then his phone rang.

May you like

He answered, listened silently, and looked straight at me.

“Kate,” he whispered, “there's something about your father you need to know before the senator gets here.”
