Chapter 2

That very same afternoon, Gretchen sat across the wide desk from Abigail, an experienced family law attorney with a professional office located in the Edina neighborhood. Abigail spent several long minutes carefully reviewing the divorce agreement, bank statements, and tax documents with a serious expression.

“These huge funds do not simply disappear from official records by accident,” Abigail said firmly as she looked up.

Gretchen lowered her eyes to the floor in deep regret.

“I really should have noticed all of this much sooner,” Gretchen whispered softly.

“No, you trusted your husband,” Abigail replied gently. “That is not the same thing as being naive or foolish.”

That comforting phrase almost made Gretchen burst into tears right then and there.

Abigail pointed her pen directly at the long list of financial transfers made to the consulting company.

“Do you personally know this woman named Cheyenne?” Abigail asked carefully.

“I only saw her name once in a quick phone message,” Gretchen answered honestly.

“Your husband has been transferring large sums of money for nearly a year and a half to a company directly linked to her,” the lawyer explained smoothly.

The lawyer then asked her to do something extremely difficult over the coming days.
